Hi Christine

We haven't created a rights statement record directly from an Agent record and I don't think we would. I can however, foresee a time when we might want to identify all rights agreements/sub-records attached to a particular Agent.

Scenario - a Literary Executor who controls copyright/3rd part use rights for several literary collections - at a point in time the contact officer changes and they wish to know exactly what collections they 'control' - I would want to go to the Agent record and locate any rights statements/sub-records attached to that Agent...

However, there are other ways we could get this - by attaching an Agent record to the Collection/Accession/Digital Object with a role of "copyright owner" or equivalent but the only choice I have is "Source" or "Creator" or "subject" - none of which is exactly right for indicating an "Executor" or "rights owner"/"Delegate relationship - The agent is NOT a Source or a Creator but does have a relationship to the Collection (maybe our understanding of "Source" is too limited?).

So, I can't see any problem in not being able to create a Rights agreement directly from an Agent but it would be good to have an additional Role in the Rights Agreement record.

Emma

Subject: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] another question on rights statements in ArchivesSpace - agents and rights statements

Hello members,

I have another question related to the upcoming enhancement of the rights statements sub-record in ArchivesSpace. Is anyone creating rights statements attached to agents?

Currently the application allows you to create a rights statement sub-record from an Agent record. This could be interpreted as being the rights for the agent him/her/themselves, rather than for specific material. We believe this may have been done in error. There has been a longstanding feature request to enable someone to see a list of the materials for which a particular agent holds rights, but not allow a rights sub-record to be created for an agent: https://archivesspace.atlassian.net/browse/AR-1297

The new model will allow for agents to be linked from rights statements attached to accessions, resources, or digital objects. (See https://archivesspace.atlassian.net/browse/ANW-112) In addition to being PREMIS-compliant, we think this may also have been the original intent.

But I'm interested to hear if and how people have used the capability to create a rights statement for an agent in ArchivesSpace. If you could no longer create a rights statement for an agent, would this cause a problem?

Thanks for any input, positive or negative!
Christine
