November 2016 Update

Development

We recently finalized a long-term development partnership agreement with Hudson Molonglo (HM) (http://hudsonmolonglo.com/<http://hudsonmolonglo.com/>). This partnership will run for the duration of the fiscal year. HM built version 1.0 of ArchivesSpace and has been responsible for significant code contributions since, including the new container management functionality and location enhancements present in the 1.5.0 release. HM is also currently working on the highly anticipated Public User Interface. HM is extremely knowledgeable about the application and highly respected in the archival and development communities and we are delighted to be working with them in this way.

HM will work on bug fixes, stack improvements, new feature development and the creation of a development road map. They will be providing support to address high priority development needs while the new technical lead works with the ArchivesSpace community on code contributions from within. This two-pronged approach will have a substantial, positive short- and long-term impact on the software. HM's work will follow the path as outlined in the ArchivesSpace development catalog and/or as prioritized by the ArchivesSpace Prioritization sub team (https://archivesspace.atlassian.net/wiki/display/AC/Development+Prioritization+sub-team ).

Staffing News

After three years of outstanding service, Brad Westbrook will soon step down as the inaugural ArchivesSpace Program Manager. Brad has worked tirelessly since 2013 to help position ArchivesSpace for success in the community. He was one of the original architects of the Archivists' Toolkit when he was at the University of California San Diego, and has been instrumental in rallying the archival community around the need for more standardized archives information management and working to bring associated software applications to archivists for many years. In his role at ArchivesSpace, he has helped navigate the myriad issues associated with bringing a new software service to the community. Brad's familiar face was often seen at SAA and the many events, conferences and hackathons that he participated in or led. His last day as Program Manager will be November 30, and he takes with us our great thanks and warm wishes.

We have initiated the search for a new Program Manager. The Program Manager is central to the success of the program, working closely and collaboratively with the ArchivesSpace community, advisory groups, and Board to develop strategy and goals. The Program Manager will be involved in all aspects of the program, and will be a key spokesperson and advocate for the program. We are seeking someone with strong experience with archives, technology projects, software development and in building consensus across a diverse group of perspectives. The posting is available on the LYRASIS website at http://www.lyrasis.org/job/Pages/LYRASIS-Positions.aspx.

The search for the new Technical Lead is well underway. This position will be responsible for the overall development of the software and will work to engage a broader set of developers to participate in the program, providing technical guidance, support and leadership to create a robust developer community. We have received numerous applications for the position and have started the review process and initial interviews.

Openings on User Advisory Council and Technical Advisory Council

There was recently a call for additional appointees for two member groups, the User Advisory Council (UAC) and the Technical Advisory Council (TAC). These groups are critical parts of the ArchivesSpace community and provide leadership and guidance to the program and its users in many ways. UAC has two openings and TAC has one opening. More details are available in the calls from the two groups.

UAC call: http://lyralists.lyrasis.org/pipermail/archivesspace_member_reps/2016-October/000208.html

TAC call: http://lyralists.lyrasis.org/pipermail/archivesspace_users_group/2016-October/004167.html

Nominations should be submitted by your institution's Member Representative. To nominate a candidate please respond to the questions asked in the respective call and indicate the areas of activity to which the nominee is prepared to contribute. Send this information via email to ArchivesSpace Program Manager Brad Westbrook (brad.westbrook at lyrasis.org), who will collect nominations on behalf of the Councils. Self-nominations by those who fit the criteria for each group are also encouraged. All nominations must be submitted by 9:00 p.m. ET Friday, Nov 11th.
