[Archivesspace_Users_Group] Finding aid title vs. finding aid filing title

Helen,

Yes. You’re correct. Our finding aid titles all start with “Guide to the” then the resource title. Our filing title is usually just the person’s name. I also prefer the user to never see a filing title; it’s simply what our Digital Services department uses to create alphabetized lists of finding aids. My staff & students (there are about 14 of us) have all said they hate seeing the filing title displayed internally in the browse lists.

I think I see what you're saying Donnelly. In our records, the collection/resource title and finding aid title are the same - if the collection title is "Marion Basset Papers" then the finding aid title is "Marion Basset Papers," not "Finding Aid for Marion Basset Papers," as others might list it.

In your example, you have "Bank, Harold" listed after "Bank of the State of Alabama, Huntsville Branch." If I'm getting it right this time, you want your resource list to show "Harold Bank Papers" following "Bank of the State of Alabama Huntsville Branch Records" (or whatever your collection titles may be), and for the EAD and PDF finding aids to display "Guide to the Harold Bank Papers." Is that right? If so, then ultimately we want the same thing, and I would also support showing the resource title in search results or browse lists and the finding aid title on finding aids. I would prefer for a user to never see a filing title at all.

Helen and everyone,

Now that I’ve read the JIRA ticket you referenced and re-read your message, I should change to say that I would like to see 1) the finding aid title, not the filing title, displayed on the finding aid page (EAD) and PDF. Within ArchivesSpace results or browse lists we don’t really care to display the finding aid title—we just want to see the resource title. We don’t care as much about the filing title as apparently other people do—our wish is that we can customize the display as we could in AT.

In the attached image we see the label as “Title,” but it’s actually displaying the filing title. We want to be able to display the real collection title. That’s not an option under User Preferences.

Thanks,
Donnelly

Helen,

Yes, that’s exactly it. Thanks!

Hi Donnelly,

We have that same issue. It appears that having a filing title overrides any finding aid title displayed in the public view. It looks like part of this was addressed in a JIRA ticket before (AR-759<https://archivesspace.atlassian.net/browse/AR-759>), where the PUI switched from sorting by resource/finding aid titles to sorting by filing titles.

Correct me if this is not what you're after, but I would like to see 1) the finding aid title, not the filing title, displayed on the finding aid page and PDF, and 2) if possible, for resource lists to sort by the filing title but display the finding aid title.

We recently migrated from AT. We’ve noticed in our PDFs and EADs that the finding aid filing title is showing up where we’d like the finding aid title to display. After a quick test, I found that when the filing title field is null, the finding aid title does show up. We’d like to have both, but having the filing title rather than the finding aid title display is problematic. In addition, in the resource lists (browsing and search results) the filing title displays instead of the resource title itself. Again, if we delete the filing title, the collection title displays.

Is anyone else having this problem? Is there any way to solve it?

Thanks,
Donnelly
