What's Covered:
Your platform is the front door to your content. Whether a government agency or nonprofit publisher, the content and scholarly research you make available to your users is paramount to your mission and viability. With new platform innovations and user expectations moving at the speed of light, it's no easy task to figure out when and how to implement a transition to a new or upgraded platform.
Whatever your decision, you will need one that's cost-effective to install, manage and that's intuitive and easy for your constituents to use. More importantly, you need to do this without disruption to your users who rely on your content and research daily to advance their work.
This special NFAIS Workshop, taking place at The Brookings Institution in Washington DC, Thursday, June 18, features a distinguished group of speakers who will discuss their experiences and lessons learned in evaluating and implementing new content platforms within their organizations.
This event's overall theme centers on key strategies publishers, government agencies and scholarly societies should set to optimize the selection, adoption and migration of new platforms. Key topics include:

  *   Understanding what researchers and other users are looking for in effective platforms;
  * Knowing how to migrate seamlessly from one platform to another without disruption to daily workflow; and
  * Looking at the standards to which platforms need to adhere both now and in the future.

**AGENDA**

9:30 - 9:35 am: Welcome and Opening Remarks (Marcie Granahan, NFAIS Executive Director; Richard Huffine, Workshop Moderator)

9:35 - 10:15 am: Platform Functionality for Discovery, Distribution & Dissemination: The Current Landscape (Rich Belanger, Chief Technology Officer, ProQuest)

Belanger opens the workshop with an overview of the current landscape. He discusses the difference between editorial and production-oriented platforms from those that are oriented toward distribution and dissemination, the overlap, and why sometimes this can be a little messy. In this session, Belanger addresses the evolving role of platforms in the presentation of content, the key technologies driving platform innovation, and evolving user expectations for platform functionality. He also touches on the requirements of the RFP and key points to include, as well as the advisory role providers and vendors can play in the process.

10:15 - 10:45 am: The User Experience and User Expectations (Bradley Gernand, Manager of Library and Information Services, Institute for Defense Analyses)

Gernand addresses the user experience and the formats and functionalities needed for today's researchers and librarians. In this session, he reviews existing supports for discovery and value-added support tools used by the end user, as well as the importance of metadata for ensuring quality and discoverability.

10:45 - 11:00 am: Break

11:00 - 11:30 am: Provider Expectations and Experiences When Migrating Platforms: NTIS Case Study (Julio Rojas, Office of Product Management and Acquisition, NTIS)

The National Technical Information Service migrated content from its Fedora platform to a Mongo DB platform. Rojas presents the strategic decisions behind this shift; the options considered, such as open source vs. an internal build; and the steps NTIS took in implementation, from contractor selection to developing the timetable to promoting the launch. He also shares the success of the migration, including overcoming concerns about disruption of service, as well as the reaction of the client base to the new platform.

11:30 am - 12:30 pm: Lunch

12:30 - 2:00 pm: Platform Selection and Delivering on Essential Requirements: Case Studies from Non-Government and Government Perspectives (Doug Armato, Director, University of Minnesota Press; Stanley Elswick, Database Manager, NOAA Library; third speaker TBA)

In this session, three representatives from the government, university presses, and scholarly society publishers address their specific content concerns in platform selection, and how the nature of the content (book, journal, etc.) and the impact of format drove the decision-making process. Presenters discuss economic and production considerations in the selection process, as well as sales and marketing considerations, and public access platform options, such as CDC Stat or PubMed.

2:00 - 2:30 pm: Industry Standards: The Spaghetti Bowl (Todd Carpenter, Executive Director, NISO)

Carpenter shares the key standards that platforms need to deliver on, as well as standards that may be on the horizon. In this session, he addresses basic standards for identifiers and link resolvers, as well as support for seamless navigation and authentication.

2:30 - 2:45 pm: Break

2:45 - 3:15 pm: Ensuring Seamless Connectivity for Users and Providers (Speaker TBA)

In this session, issues of navigation between various types of networked systems are addressed, including authentication systems and simple transfer protocols, such as CHORUS and Shibboleth.

3:15 - 4:45 pm: Moderated Wrap-Up (Richard Huffine, Independent Consultant and NFAIS Workshop Moderator)

Richard Huffine leads an in-depth discussion with workshop presenters on emerging platform technologies, when migrating to a new platform becomes a necessity, and the pitfalls to beware of in the process.
