[Archivesspace_Users_Group] Upgrading from 1.09

Dear Ludwig,

ArchivesSpace v1.0.9 came out in May 2014, and, due to various data model changes since then, you will have to make a couple stops along the way to get to 2.2.0. The upgrading documentation at https://github.com/archivesspace/archivesspace/blob/master/UPGRADING.md explains both general and special considerations for moving from version to version.

For your particular upgrade, there will be at least two steps, 1.0.9 to a version from 1.5.0 to 2.0.1 (Steve suggests a 1.5.x version will be best), then 2.2.0 to get to the most current version. With the upgrade to 2.0.1, you’ll be moving to the newer container model, and will want to pay particular attention to the information in the special upgrade instructions at https://github.com/archivesspace/archivesspace/blob/master/UPGRADING_1.5.0.md. We do maintain all of our releases on Github (https://github.com/archivesspace/archivesspace/releases), so getting the intermediate releases will not be a problem.

Because it’s quite a big jump, you may want to first upgrade from 1.0.9 to 1.4.2, then the 1.5.0 to 2.0.1 version of your choice to make the container management upgrade, then 2.0.1 to 2.2.0 to get to the most current version. But maybe do a trial or two of each to see which has more satisfying results.

In either case, you’ll want to have your archivists check the data between upgrades to make sure that what they’re seeing is what they expect to see, and check your logs if it isn’t. You can also reach out to the program team at ArchivesSpaceHome at lyrasis.org<mailto:ArchivesSpaceHome at lyrasis.org> at any point if you’d like to put in a technical support ticket for additional assistance.

Please let us – and the list – know if you have other questions and how it goes. I’m not aware of anyone who has made the upgrade from this early a version recently, but I’m sure you’re not alone in running an older version of ArchivesSpace, so whatever is learned during your upgrade is sure to help others.

Christine

Older releases ARE available — you just have click thru to the next page (at the bottom).

[ Is there a way to filter out the pre-releases from GitHub /releases? I don’t see anything in the API. ]

I would advise migrating to 1.5.x first and verifying that the container conversion process has no errors before upgrading to 2.0 or 2.1. ( If there are any issues with the conversion, I found it somewhat more difficult to find and fix them in 2.0 than in 1.5.x )

I'm trying to upgrade our current version of ArchivesSpace 1.0.9 to the latest version. Is it safe to make the jump from 1.09 to 2.2.0? If not are there any suggestion on what order I should run the upgrade?

Looking at the available releases the oldest available version is 2.0.0. How safe is it to make the jump from 1.0.9 to 2.0.0? Thx.
