[Archivesspace_Users_Group] Sandbox Off line - 502 error/ArchivesSpace Educational Program membership

I had an archival description class do exactly that – install on their laptops – this semester. It worked pretty well, and there are a couple of important lessons for archivists (readme conventions, command line basics, how web apps work) that fit in with this approach.

Yes, and this has come up a few times now...

To keep costs down, we run the sandbox on the smallest possible server we can on AWS and simply flush it and rebuild from time to time.

It's not a good platform to run classes on.

Maybe a good idea would be to have the students download Aspace and run it on their laptops. It's pretty easy to do ( if they have java ) and there's the google list they can send emails to if they run into problems...

Hi Kari,

"It seems from the description that the ArchivesSpace instance is hosted by LYRASIS which is in general the challenge of having the program for a class."

I just want to clarify that this is not the case. The archivesspace.org servers, including the sandbox, are hosted by the program team, not LYRASIS.

Mark

Hi Christine,

Thanks for your note. I didn’t know about the Educational Program Membership – and that sounds great! It seems from the description that the ArchivesSpace instance is hosted by LYRASIS which is in general the challenge of having the program for a class.

This is definitely something I’ll see about joining for class next semester I teach. Thank you for sharing that information.

Dear Kari (and others who may be interested in using ArchivesSpace in courses),

We were alerted to this outage this morning and rebuilt the sandbox a short time ago. It is back up now.

The sandbox is intended to be a place where people who don’t want to download and install anything to try out various aspects of ArchivesSpace. It’s cleared out and rebuilt frequently as we make updates to the application, so it’s not a great place to work on class assignments or anything that is either time-sensitive or needs to be kept. In a case like this one, we would suggest either doing a local installation of ArchivesSpace, or, for assignments that are part of work in a graduate program in archives/information science/public history, etc., faculty or administrators consider a free Educational Program Membership (see http://archivesspace.org/educationalmembership). The latter provides students with access to the ArchivesSpace user manual, and the program with some other benefits of ArchivesSpace membership.

We currently have 8 Educational Program Members (see the bottom of our members page – http://archivesspace.org/members - for a listing), and we’d love to have other schools join them.

Best,

Christine

Subject: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] Sandbox Off line - 502 error

Hello,

I’ve had reports and checked myself just now that the Sandbox has been down since Saturday or Sunday. The error is 502 Bad Gateway – Ngnix 1.6.2.

Thank you for looking into getting it back up. I’ve asked students in my course who are using ArchivesSpace to learn about archival management systems to create resource records and so are interested in having the Sandbox back up.

Thank you,

Kari
