[Archivesspace_Users_Group] Extent Type

I've always advocated for storing only a plural extent type ("X feet" is one of the default AT values, so in the past I've never added "X foot" to my database) , and then changing that value for the display when necessary. There aren't too many irregular plural nouns to consider, so it's not that much code to maintain.

And I agree that the ASpace Public Interface should handle this. It's the most sensible default, in my opinion, but it could also be a configurable option in a future release of the public interface.

Mark

P.S. if you don't store plural or singular only, then you'll need to make sure that you combine the two when creating reports.

Since the filed is a number, it would be best if public interface views test the value and add plurals when necessary.

This, of course, assumes that you're publishing elsewhere as HTML and not using the public interface of ASpace...

Another way to go would be to just pick one, and have your XML -> HTML stylesheet take care of plurals. It would look for values greater than one and change it to "boxes", for instance.

Hi, Jaime,

One thing I have done in the past is to use the "parenthetical plural," for lack of a better phrase, i.e., "volume(s)", "image(s), etc. Thus, 1 volume(s) or 4 volume(s). This does not work for foot/feet obviously.

That's just one suggestion.

How are other people dealing with the singular/plural issues in Extent Type?

What I mean by this is we might have 1 volume or 2 volumes in a collection. Do you have both "volume" and "volumes" in the Extent Type drop-down or do you force people to chose "volumes" even if they only have 1 item (and then manually fix the spawned finding aid/marc record)?

This may sound silly, but is actually an incredibly important question for my cleanup and clarification of procedures going forward.

Thanks!
Jaime
