[Archivesspace_small_archives_users_group] [EXTERNAL] Introducing myself

Hello all!
[cid:image002.jpg at 01D78EA9.15BD3E60]

I am Vic Jones the Archives and Special Collections Librarian at Mississippi University for Women. We just got started with ArchivesSpace last month, so I am very, very new to it. I have had some experience with ArchivesSpace beforehand but nothing like what I am doing now. I also agree with some of the other sentiments about feeling lost with the main server. I hope that this one will be a bit more beginner friendly!

Currently, all of our finding aids and materials are in various documents and spreadsheets. My latest project has been figuring out a way to batch upload all the information that I need. I am also happy to pose the group’s first(ish) question!

I have gone back and fourth with spreadsheet uploads and Rapid Data Entry, but I have been struggling to find a way to batch upload child barcodes. Any suggestions?

I am looking forward to working with you all and learning ASpace together! One we’ll be the pros in the main server!

Best,

Hi Jess, June and any other small archive archivists!

I'm Susan Aprill, Archivist for the Kingston Public Library. I've had ASpace for a while and am slowly moving/revising/correcting/adding data and figuring out how to do things. I've managed to avoid IT issues by using libraryhost.com<https://libraryhost.com/>, which I've found to be a very hospitable host. I've gotten through some proof of concept experiments, both successful and not so much; my next steps are customizing the public interface, uploading via spreadsheet, compiling workflows in a manual, and publicizing the site

My little instance is here<https://kpl.libraryhost.com/>. I was worried about the "wall of things to do" too, and about looking half-baked or ill-informed on the internet. I just crossed my fingers and jumped in with the patron saint of Kingston history, Emily Fuller Drew<https://kplma.org/emilyDance.htm>. Material by and about her went into accessions, resources, agents, digital objects, archival objects, and links to single items, Digital Commonwealth, and to the Omeka site where images and text files live.

Here's the search results for the Emily material<https://kpl.libraryhost.com/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&op%5B%5D=&q%5B%5D=%22emily+drew&limit=&field%5B%5D=&from_year%5B%5D=&to_year%5B%5D=&commit=Search> I've published. I think she would have loved it! There's a lot that's not public, of course. I'm slowly making my way through issues like how to do this<https://kpl.libraryhost.com/repositories/2/digital_objects/30> to avoid this<https://kpl.libraryhost.com/repositories/2/digital_objects/23>. It's messy and fun, and it's measurable progress and a good foundation for adding more and more and more...

It's good to meet you both, and I hope more of us join in.
Yours,
Susan

We’ve been using ASpace now for a little over a year and I still feel like a novice. We went through implementation sans a systems person, and just me trying to work things out with our IT folks. I read the list avidly trying to learn more, but I still am rather clueless about most of the technical side. It has been so helpful though, as I inherited an archive where nothing was inventoried and no finding aids existed at all, so I get the benefit of starting with a rather blank slate for my backlog. Good luck with your implementation.

Hi small institutions!
I'm Jess
[cid:image008.png at 01D78EA7.C22F6E90]
I am an archivist who's mostly doing reference library work in a public setting, and the "lone arranger" of my department, but with at least some assistance. I get to be the project manager for implementing ArchivesSpace. We are going from the library's book-centric ILS/catalog, and whatever word documents or excel sheets or possibly access databases I can find that hold archive inventories/finding aids.

I have experience using ArchivesSpace from previous jobs, and even helped implement, but key word in this is "helped"- not run.

I'm grateful for the pairing program that ASpace does (Hi, Kate!) but I want to take a more active role, and all the conversations I've seen I don't really understand yet because I'm so close to the beginning. I wanted to say hi and see who else was in this space.

I am working on formulating my question to the greater group but right now I am mostly in the stare blankly at the wall of things I'm supposed to know how to do that I don't know how to do. Would love to hear from more folks here in listserv land who need to work up the courage to ask questions.

Best wishes, warmest regards-
