With the advent and now ubiquity of the Internet across most of the globe, accessing the wide range of scholarly content and data ostensibly is easier than ever. This range includes content provider platforms, discovery service tools enabled on library web pages, search engines such as Google and Google Scholar, social networks and unique identifier tools that enable links to many different points of discovery. Adding to this surfeit of discovery capabilities, leveraging the cloud, is the continued introduction of new discovery services. Even with these myriad resources, researchers also rely on abstract and indexing databases that include well-respected, highly cited content from publishers and other sources around the world. Drawing on the recently released report by Tracy Gardner and Simon Inger, "How Readers Discover Content in Scholarly Publications: Trends in reader behaviour from 2005 to 2015," NFAIS presents a full-day, in-person and virtual Workshop, Wednesday, June 29, on the topic of discovery in the context of scholarly research. This NFAIS Hybrid Workshop, to be held in-person at the Embassy Suites Old Town Hotel in Alexandria, VA, will examine the diverse ways content is made available today and how key stakeholders - including publishers, scholars and researchers - are responding to these sometimes connected, and often, separate roads to the discovery of high-quality, credible information. Presenters (listed per presenter order): Simon Inger, Founder, Simon Inger Consulting Mike Showalter, Executive Director, End-User Services, OCLC Ryan Bernier, Vice President, Database Partnerships, EBSCO Christine Stohn, Senior Product Manager, ProQuest/Ex Libris Jessica Kowalski, Director of Market Development, Scopus David Sommer, Product Director and Co-founder, Kudos Dominic Mitchell, Community Manager, DOAJ Sarah Rouhi, Director of Business Development, Altmetric North America Dan Valen, Product Specialist, figshare Bill Mischo, Head, Grainger Engineering Library Information Center, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Stephanie Garrett, Associate Director, Online Products, SAGE Publications To register for this event, go to: http://www.nfais.org/index.php?option=com_mc&view=mc&mcid=72&eventId=509127&orgId=nfais&recurringId=0 _________________________________________________________________________________ Please note: you can register to attend onsite or virtual! This dynamic is evolving via collaboration between research institutes, governments, publishers and the public at large, all of which are promoting a transformative environment that cuts across industries and fields of study for exploration and discovery. Much of this the momentum behind the open data movement comes from the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy's 2013 memorandum, "Expanding Public Access to the Results of Federally Funded Research." In addition, the UK already has implemented firm data archiving policies and mandates. To this end, clear benefits of open data sharing are emerging - increased visibility of scholarly work, safe storage for data through archiving, the optimization of publicly funded research, and the benefit to the public's well-being through more rapid advancement of scientific research and discovery. Yet challenges and risks need to be addressed to ensure open data's future, including privacy concerns, complying with complex funder mandates, managing reuse policies and ensuring responsible researcher interpretation of shared data. To explore these issues in-depth, NFAIS is hosting a two-part virtual workshop, to be held on Thursday, June 16 and Monday, June 20, that will address current open data mandates and models by a diverse range of expert presenters from leading universities, open source application developers, publishers and researchers. Who should attend this two-part NFAIS Workshop: scholarly researchers, publishers, librarians, government agency officials, non-profit scholarly society and foundation staff, and information services consultants. Special Note: This is an NFAIS Virtual Workshop taking place in two parts - just register once to attend both events! Presenters (listed per presenter order): Amanda J.
