LYRASIS is pleased to share the news that we are a supporting partner of a second press, Liverpool University Press (LUP)<https://www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/> as it joins Central European University Press in transitioning to Open Access (OA) through the innovative Opening the Future<https://www.openingthefuture.net/> model. Liverpool University Press is the UK's third oldest university press and is an award-winning academic publisher specializing in literature, modern languages, history, and film studies. Libraries participating in LUP's Opening the Future program will receive access to portions of the press's highly-regarded closed backlist and support the publication of forthcoming books in OA.

Opening the Future combines the aims of open access publishing with a subscription-based package that fits into familiar acquisition workflows in libraries. The model offers a sustainable funding stream for the Press to produce new OA monographs and expands access to other content for libraries and their user communities.

Benefits of the Opening the Future Model
The goal of the Opening the Future model is to yield a sustainable and continuing source of funding for the Press as it endeavors to publish more titles in OA. Ongoing library budget pressures have increased during the pandemic, and a shared funding model rather than a per-title book processing charge (BPC) is a cost-effective solution. No single institution will bear a disproportionate burden.

Participants will gain access to a package of 36 highly-regarded paywalled titles<https://lup.openingthefuture.net/packages/7/> from LUP's Contemporary Hispanic and Latin American Studies backlist. The titles are DRM free and libraries will gain perpetual access to this collection after three years of participation. Both the backlist and the newly published OA titles will be hosted on LUP's dedicated eBook platform<https://www.liverpooluniversitypress.co.uk/collections/opening-the-future-modern-language-package/>. The new OA titles will also be listed in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB), which supplies metadata to library discovery services.

Participant funds will be used to make newly published books openly accessible. When the annual revenue target is met and the entire monograph frontlist is openly accessible, future fees can be lowered. Libraries and institutions worldwide are invited to participate.
