Since fall 2020, the University of Michigan Press (UMP) has been taking steps to develop a publishing program that aligns with their mission and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility by transitioning to an Open Access (OA) monograph model they call "Fund to Mission". To date the Fund to Mission supporting community has grown to 70 libraries and consortia and they have reached 60% of their revenue goal. Agencies are advised to use a DPI service that meets a number of requirements such as being open and non-proprietary, and currently ORCID is the only DPI service that meets the requirements. A few months ago, the National Science and Technology Council Subcommittee on Research Security released implementation guidance for all federal funding agencies based on the National Security Presidential Memo 33 (NSPM-33) that came out early last year. Details about use of digital persistent identifiers (DPIs) starts on page 8 of the implementation guidance (page 18 of the PDF). This call will be especially of interest to those who are involved in supporting researchers with grant applications, Data Management Plans, and other grant-related workflows. Join the ORCID US Community on March 15 for a community call where we will discuss the implications of this new guideline. Our featured guest speaker, Lori Schultz, Assistant Vice President for Research Intelligence at University of Arizona, will share her perspective as a research administrator, member of the ORCID board, and member of the Federal Demonstration Partnership (FDP) about what NSPM-33 means for ORCID, researchers, and how research organizations in the US can prepare. ORCID & NSPM-33 call details: * When: Tues. March 15 @ 2pm Eastern/ 1pm Central/ 12pm Mountain/ 11am Pacific * Register to attend: Meeting Registration - Zoom * Agenda: 2022-03-15 ORCID US Community Call - NSPM-33 and ORCID This call will be recorded and shared with all who register. OACIP is a community-driven framework that enables multiple stakeholders - including libraries of all types, academic departments, and funding agencies - to strategically evaluate and collectively fund open access content initiatives through an efficient process. OACIP doesn't just bring together investment opportunities in one place, it also provides important and consistent information about those opportunities to support informed and principled investment decisions. Participating publishers respond to criteria-based questions about their OA program, and the responses are posted on the OACIP website. Using this approach, OACIP provides tailored match-making between nonprofit scholarly publishers that are seeking financial investments from funders (like libraries) that want to support OA publishing aligning with their mission and values. Funding Update for Current OACIP Participating Journals Thank you to the libraries who have already committed to support this year's OACIP Participating Journals! You will find how much each journal has raised, as well as how much more funding is needed below: * Algebraic Combinatorics (ALCO) is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that published its first issue in January 2018. It is a specialty journal in the burgeoning field of algebraic combinatorics, spanning across and intricately linking several areas of mathematical research. ALCO was created after the entire editorial board of Springer-Nature's Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics announced their intention to resign. The current journal is owned by mathematicians, dedicated to free dissemination of research, and committed to not charging fees for authors or readers. ALCO seeks to raise a total of $125,000 to cover its next five years of publishing. These funds will be used to cover costs such as copy editing and fair editor compensation. * Funds Already Committed: $12,000/year for five years ($60,000) * Funds Still Needed: $13,000/year for five years ($65,000) * History of Media Studies (HMS) is a new, peer-reviewed, scholar-run open access journal founded to augment understanding of the ways that media have been conceived, investigated, and studied around the world. The journal is published by mediastudies.press, a scholar-led, Diamond OA, nonprofit publisher launched in 2019. HMS seeks to raise a total of $62,500 to support five years of its publishing. Funds will be used to cover professional copy-editing/proofing, software, platform hosting, and other infrastructure. * Funds Already Committed: $4,000/year for five years ($20,000) * Funds Still Needed: $8,500/year for five years ($42,500) * The Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly Communication (JLSC) is a peer-reviewed open access journal particularly interested in the intersection of librarianship and publishing and the resulting role of libraries in both content dissemination and content creation. Publishing since 2012, JLSC became a publication of the Iowa State University (ISU) Digital Press in July 2021. JLSC seeks to raise a total of $90,000 to sustain five years of its publishing. Funds will be used to cover annual costs, including copy editing, layout, accessibility checking, and platform hosting. * Funds Already Committed: $11,250/year for five years ($56,250) * Funds Still Needed: $6,750/year for five years ($33,750) Pledge Your Support and Invest in OACIP Today More information about the journals and how you can invest in them can be found on the Open Access Community Investment Program webpage. The investment window is open now through July 31, 2022. If you have questions or would like to pledge your support for any of the journals, please email oacip at lyrasis.org.
