Based on these principles, UMP is now transitioning to an Open Access (OA) monograph model they call "Fund to Mission." We at LYRASIS are enthusiastic supporters of this new direction, and we urge everyone to consider participating in this new model for open monographs jointly funded by the University of Michigan and the library community. The Fund to Mission Model The Press is seeking a total of $250,000 in annual funding from the library community as it transitions to Open Access (OA). This amount is a match to internal funding from the University of Michigan. Every library investment in the University of Michigan Press Ebook Collection (UMP EBC) supports the Press's transition to OA. The Library Community is invited to participate in UMP EBC by way of their current fair pricing. However, rather than only funding a paywalled collection, an increasing percentage of titles become OA. By committing to purchase one of the UMP EBC packages, libraries: * Support the publication in OA of at least 50% (~45 titles) of UMP scholarly monographs in 2022 and 75% (~65 titles) of UMP scholarly monographs in 2023. If the full funding goal is met, the percentage of titles published as OA will increase. * Receive perpetual access to the remaining restricted frontlist titles and term access to the backlist (~1,500 titles), which will otherwise remain closed to non-purchasers; * Support authors' ability to publish innovative, digital scholarship leveraging the next-generation, open-source Fulcrum platform. Go to the Fund to Mission website to find more information about why UMP is transitioning to OA: https://www.publishing.umich.edu/features/fund-to-mission More information about the collection, licensing and pricing is located at http://bit.ly/LYRUMPEBC. How You Can Help UMP Reach the Funding Goal Every library investment in UMP EBC supports the Press's transition to OA. Committing to participate in the three-year Transitional Collection (2021 - 2023) will help UMP reach its funding goal more quickly, but, depending on your library's collection development priorities and current resource allocations, we invite you to purchase any of the UMP EBC packages. 2021 Fall Special Offer UMP EBC pricing will remain flat for 2022 and for a limited-time UMP is extending the following special offers on all of their ebook packages that can help your stewarded funds go a bit further: A 5% discount will be applied to the purchase of any of the following collections with a commitment to purchase made by December 17, 2021. * UMP EBC Frontlists * The Transitional Collection (2021 - 2023) * Upfront purchase of 2021, 2022, and 2023 frontlists * Libraries will own these titles in perpetuity as they become available and will have term access to the backlist through 2023. * 2021 Frontlist Collection (including complementary term access to backlist) * 2022 Frontlist Collection (including complementary term access to backlist) * UMP EBC Backlists * Single Year Backlist Collection (2012 - 2020) * Complete Backlist Collection (2012 - 2020) * UMP EBC All Books Collection * Combined purchase of the 2021 Frontlist, 2022 Frontlist and Complete Backlist (2012 - 2020) Please contact LYRASIS Member Support to request a quote. For those not familiar with IRUS, the service consolidates COUNTER-conformant statistics from repositories and helps to demonstrate their value and impact, both internally and in comparison with other institutions through a public interface at https://irus.jisc.ac.uk/r5/uk/. The interface provides open access to the comparison of usage data from all participating institutions across the globe. IRUS provides institutions with the advantage of being able to analyze repository metrics gathered to the same COUNTER standard that is widely used to gather usage data from licensed library content. New features and integrations: * There are several new updates to IRUS COUNTER Release 5 (R5): * A new version of the IRUS R5 custom SUSHI APIs to support tabular outputs (CSV and TSV) as well as JSON * Updates to the interface have shortened the report run times * Clearer and more informative error reporting (e.g. when no usage returned) * The Esploro service from Ex Libris has been added to the list of supported repository systems, including DSpace, FigShare, Samvera (Ruby Gem) and more. For a complete list of implementations, please see: https://irus.jisc.ac.uk/r5/participate/implement/ * There is now an updated integration for repositories based on the Ruby-on-Rails framework. The University of Michigan has integrated their research data repository, Deep Blue Data, with IRUS-US by updating the existing IRUS analytics code toolkit for the Hyrax software. The code toolkit (gem) can be integrated with any Ruby-on-Rails repository, allowing for some potential changes if the repository is not Hyrax-specific. As mentioned above, the usage data is open access and can be viewed by any user. We encourage everyone to visit the site and experiment with the different reporting options. The IRUS-US service is available for a yearly subscription fee to any U.S. institutions regardless of LYRASIS membership. Please contact Hannah Rosen for more information or to request a quote. Thank you for your continued support of LYRASIS programs. OACIP, a joint project between LYRASIS and Transitioning Society Publications to Open Access (TSPOA), is a community-driven framework that enables multiple stakeholders - including libraries of all types, academic departments, and funding agencies - to strategically evaluate and collectively fund open access content initiatives through an efficient process. OACIP doesn't just bring together investment opportunities in one place, it also provides important and consistent information about those opportunities to support informed and principled investment decisions. Participating publishers respond to criteria-based questions about their OA program, and the responses are posted on the OACIP website. Using this approach, OACIP provides tailored match-making between nonprofit scholarly publishers that are seeking financial investments from funders (like libraries) that want to support OA publishing aligning with their mission and values. OACIP launched in 2020, piloting the program with two OA journals: Environmental Humanities and Combinatorial Theory. Thanks to many in the LYRASIS Library Community and beyond, both journals met their fundraising goals to sustainably publish OA, free to read and free to publish, for the next five years. We are building off the pilot's success by launching a second round of journals in need of investment. An OA scholarly publishing transformation can happen only with broad community support. New OACIP Participating Journals We are very excited to announce the journals seeking investments through OACIP in this next round. They are all Diamond OA journals, which means that they publish immediately OA with no fees for authors or readers. More information about each journal is below: * Algebraic Combinatorics (ALCO) is a peer-reviewed, open access journal that published its first issue in January 2018. It is a specialty journal in the burgeoning field of algebraic combinatorics, spanning across and intricately linking several areas of mathematical research. ALCO was created after the entire editorial board of Springer-Nature's Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics announced their intention to resign. The current journal is owned by mathematicians, dedicated to free dissemination of research, and committed to not charging fees for authors or readers. ALCO seeks to raise a total of $125,000 to cover its next five years of publishing. These funds will be used to cover costs such as copy editing and fair editor compensation. * History of Media Studies (HMS) is a new, peer-reviewed, scholar-run open access journal founded to augment understanding of the ways that media have been conceived, investigated, and studied around the world. The journal is published by mediastudies.press, a scholar-led, Diamond OA, nonprofit publisher launched in 2019. HMS seeks to raise a total of $62,500 to support five years of its publishing. Funds will be used to cover professional copy-editing/proofing, software, platform hosting, and other infrastructure. * The Journal of Librarianship and Scholarly Communication (JLSC) is a peer-reviewed open access journal particularly interested in the intersection of librarianship and publishing and the resulting role of libraries in both content dissemination and content creation. Publishing since 2012, JLSC became a publication of the Iowa State University (ISU) Digital Press in July 2021. JLSC seeks to raise a total of $90,000 to sustain five years of its publishing. Funds will be used to cover annual costs, including copy editing, layout, accessibility checking, and platform hosting. Pledge Your Support and Invest in OACIP Today More information about the journals and how you can invest in them can be found on the Open Access Community Investment Program webpage. The investment window is open now through July 31, 2022. If you have questions or would like to pledge your support for any of the journals, please email oacip at lyrasis.org. Liverpool University Press is the UK's third oldest university press and is an award-winning academic publisher specializing in literature, modern languages, history, and film studies. Libraries participating in LUP's Opening the Future program will receive access to portions of the press's highly-regarded closed backlist and support the publication of forthcoming books in OA. Opening the Future combines the aims of open access publishing with a subscription-based package that fits into familiar acquisition workflows in libraries. The model offers a sustainable funding stream for the Press to produce new OA monographs and expands access to other content for libraries and their user communities. Benefits of the Opening the Future Model The goal of the Opening the Future model is to yield a sustainable and continuing source of funding for the Press as it endeavors to publish more titles in OA. Ongoing library budget pressures have increased during the pandemic, and a shared funding model rather than a per-title book processing charge (BPC) is a cost-effective solution. No single institution will bear a disproportionate burden. Participants will gain access to a package of 36 highly-regarded paywalled titles from LUP's Contemporary Hispanic and Latin American Studies backlist. The titles are DRM free and libraries will gain perpetual access to this collection after three years of participation. Both the backlist and the newly published OA titles will be hosted on LUP's dedicated eBook platform. The new OA titles will also be listed in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB), which supplies metadata to library discovery services. Pricing Participant funds will be used to make newly published books openly accessible. When the annual revenue target is met and the entire monograph frontlist is openly accessible, future fees can be lowered. Libraries and institutions worldwide are invited to participate. Annual Pricing (US$) U.S. Classification (Carnegie Classification-Basic) Canada Classification (CRKN Bands) $1,150 Doctoral Bands 11, 12, 13 $925 Master's Bands 8, 9, 10 $800 Baccalaureate/Four-Year Special Focus Bands 5, 6, 7 $575 Associates/Two-Year Special Focus Bands 1, 2, 3, 4 $375 Non-profits, museums, K-12 Non-profits, museums, K-12 Opening the Future Partners LYRASIS will support the new model and facilitate US and Canadian library participation in the program.
