From Sharla.Lair at lyrasis.org Mon May 3 14:00:04 2021 From: Sharla.Lair at lyrasis.org (Sharla Lair) Date: Mon, 3 May 2021 18:00:04 +0000 Subject: [Lyropen] REMINDER: Open Access Community Investment Program Webinar - May 5, 2021 Message-ID: In December 2020, we launched the pilot of the Open Access Community Investment Program (OACIP), a project developed by LYRASIS in partnership with Transitioning Society Publications to Open Access (TSPOA) and Duke University Press. OACIP's goal is to connect libraries, consortia, and other funders with non-profit publishers and journal editorial boards that need financial investments to sustain or transition to Open Access (OA) publishing. OACIP's pilot phase launched with investment opportunities for two journals, showcasing aspects of each publishing program so that libraries and other funders can use the information to support their decisions about which OA programs to support. We have received a positive response from the library community in spite of the economic consequences of the pandemic and would like to finish the pilot with funding for the two journals by June 30, 2021. Reminder: Webinar Invitation We invite you to learn more about the criteria-driven evaluation approach developed by OACIP to determine if investing in the participating OA journal programs is right for your institution. Speakers will be from the editorial boards and publishers of: Environmental Humanities, an OA journal published by Duke University Press that is seeking investment to publish an additional OA journal issue each year for five years. As the field of environmental humanities continues its rapid growth and development, the Press and the Editors want to increase the journal's frequency in 2022 from two issues to three issues per year. Funding goal: $30,000/year for five years Combinatorial Theory, a new OA math journal created by editorial board members who recently left a large commercial publisher's journal and are re-directing their efforts. The new journal Combinatorial Theory will deepen and broaden the impact of its predecessor, with an inclusive vision that is international in scope under the leadership of a diverse editorial team that seeks top research papers from the global combinatorial community. Funding goal: $25,000/year for five years Webinar Details: Date: Wednesday, May 5 Time: 3:00 p.m. Eastern/12:00 p.m. Pacific Register for the webinar (There is a cap of 99 participants for this webinar. It will be recorded.) Take Action! We still need help to reach each journal's funding goal by June 30, 2021. Join others who have already stepped forward. Your institution or department can review the list of supporters and evaluate these two journal programs by visiting the LYRASIS Open Access Community Investment Program webpage. If these investment opportunities are right for your organization, please email Sharla Lair at sharla.lair at lyrasis.org to pledge support and commit funds. Thank you. Based on these principles, UMP is now transitioning to an Open Access (OA) monograph model they call "Fund to Mission." We here at LYRASIS are enthusiastic supporters of UMP in their new direction, and we urge everyone to take a close look at this new model for open monographs jointly funded by the University of Michigan and the library community. The Press is seeking a total of $250,000 in annual funding from the library community as it transitions to Open. This amount is a match to internal funding from the University of Michigan. Libraries are invited to continue to participate in the University of Michigan Press Ebook Collection (UMP EBC) by way of their current fair pricing. However, rather than only funding a paywalled collection, an increasing percentage of titles become Open Access. By committing to purchase one of the UMP EBC packages, libraries: * Support the publication in OA of at least half (~45 titles) of University of Michigan Press scholarly monographs in 2022. If the full funding goal is met, the percentage of titles published in open access will increase. * Receive perpetual access to the remaining restricted frontlist titles and term access to the backlist (~1,500 titles), which will otherwise remain closed to non-purchasers; * Support authors' ability to publish innovative, digital scholarship leveraging the next-generation, open-source Fulcrum platform. 2021 Spring Featured Offer More information about UMP EBC, including licensing and pricing, is located at http://bit.ly/LYRUMPEBC. Make note of the following limited-time special offer that can help your stewarded funds go a bit further: * 5% discount on 2021 Frontlist Collection (including complementary term access to backlist) with commitment to purchase made by June 30, 2021 * 5% discount on any Backlist Collection (2012 - 2020) with commitment to purchase made by June 30, 2021 * 5% All Books Discount on combined purchase of 2021 Frontlist and Complete Backlist (2012 - 2020) with commitment to purchase made by June 30, 2021 * NEW Fund to Mission UMP EBC OA Initiative * Upfront purchase of 2021, 2022, and 2023 frontlists * The OA percentage of upcoming collections will be determined based on funding, but with a goal of at least 50% per year of 2022 and 2023. * Libraries will own these titles in perpetuity as they become available and will have term access to the backlist through 2023. * Special Offer: 5% discount on Transitional Collection if commitment made by June 30, 2021 Please contact LYRASIS Member Support or your Member Representative to request a quote. Platinum open access is a model whereby publishing fees are subsidized by a group of multiple stakeholders making it free of charge to both readers to read and authors to publish. This partnership enables DUP, a mission-driven, nonprofit publisher, to host the complete contents of Demography back to volume 1 (1964), now openly available at https://read.dukeupress.edu/demography thanks to the support of community partners. As you prepare to meet fiscal year end spending allocation deadlines, please consider supporting Demography. We believe that Demography needs to be published in open access to disseminate knowledge on some of the key issues of our time. Demography presents "original research of scholars in a broad range of disciplines, including anthropology, biology, economics, geography, history, psychology, public health, sociology, and statistics. The journal encompasses a wide variety of methodological approaches to population research. Its geographic focus is global, with articles addressing demographic matters from around the planet. Its temporal scope is broad, as represented by research that explores demographic phenomena spanning the ages from past to present, and reaching toward the future." Recently, we announced the partnership LYRASIS has with Duke University Press to facilitate contributions to sustain the official journal of the Population Association of America, Demography as open access. Demography's open-access funding model relies entirely on financial support from libraries and research centers. Usage data indicates that Demography is widely used across the full spectrum of colleges and universities in the US. Libraries, research centers, and other organizations can make a concrete choice to support open-access content at any of the following levels: * Level 1/$4,000 and up * Level 2/$2,000 to $3,999 * Level 3/$1,000 to $1,999 * Level 4/$500 to $999 Organizations may participate at the level that aligns with their budget and their assessment of the value of the journal for their community. You can learn more about Demography's new funding model through this FAQ. You can also listen to a recording of a recent webinar where speakers Dean Smith, (Duke University Press), Danielle Staudt (Population Association of America), Robin Sinn (Johns Hopkins University Libraries) shared their thoughts about converting the journal to open access. Link to recording: http://lyrasis.adobeconnect.com/pwhww92g14q4/ One of our bedrock values at LYRASIS is that we can accomplish more together than alone and can empower one another to facilitate significant and sustainable change. If any of you have funds available and would like to provide support for these programs as we approach the end of the fiscal year, please direct questions and pledges of financial support for Demography to Sharla Lair at sharla.lair at lyrasis.org. You can review the complete list of all LYRASIS-supported open programs by visiting the LYRASIS Open Access Programs webpage.
