From hannah.rosen at lyrasis.org Wed Mar 3 11:07:52 2021 From: hannah.rosen at lyrasis.org (Hannah Rosen) Date: Wed, 3 Mar 2021 16:07:52 +0000 Subject: [Lyropen] OSS LYRASIS Research Survey: Participation Requested In-Reply-To: References: Message-ID: Dear Colleagues, We are excited to announce the release of our 2021 LYRASIS Research survey! This year the survey focuses on challenges and opportunities in community-supported open source software (OSS). We welcome your participation in this survey. The survey will offer LYRASIS members and participants in the GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives and museums) community a new perspective and understanding of how our institutions interact with and support GLAM-focused OSS. The survey is divided into three sections: (1) funding/supporting OSS, (2) justifying OSS, and (3) evaluating OSS. It is intended to cover the span of an institution's OSS activities, so please share the survey with your colleagues for questions that lie outside of your job duties. Please take approximately 25 minutes to fill out the following survey: http://bit.ly/37Tj10K The deadline for participation is April 2nd, 2021. At the beginning of the survey you will be asked for your name, institution and job title. All of this information will remain confidential and will not be included in any external publications/reports or presentations. We are merely using this information to identify duplicate entries from institutions across our distribution channels. For those participants who prefer to see all of the question in advance, a PDF copy of the survey has been attached to this email. As a reminder, the LYRASIS Research surveys are guided by member input. Leaders Circle members selected the research topic at our fall forum in October 2020, and then afterwards volunteer members participated in focus groups to determine the scope of the survey and potential questions. Volunteers also assisted LYRASIS staff with final reviews and edits. We at LYRASIS are grateful to be able to perform research developed by and for our community. Please contact Hannah Rosen, hannah.rosen at lyrasis.org with any questions. Thank you, LYRASIS Research and Innovation Team -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... This new program, in addition to our existing ORCID US Community, provides a shared pathway for organizations to support open research infrastructure. Persistent identifiers such as DOIs and ORCID contribute to the open research ecosystem by making research and scholarly content more FAIR: Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable. This program is designed to serve any non-profit institution in the US that is not already a DataCite member, and your organization does not need to be a LYRASIS member to participate. If your organization is interested in creating DOIs for local unique content, please consider joining the LYRASIS DataCite US Community. Membership benefits include: * The ability to create DOIs for unique local content either via DataCite's Fabrica site, or through local system integrations with the DataCite API * Membership cost sharing: the annual membership fee is $1,625 per calendar year for each participating organization (pro-rated for joining mid-year), plus a "DOI fee" based on the number of DOIs created by each organization per year (below). Dollar amounts are based on the current exchange rate and are subject to change in future years. * 1-1,999 DOIs created = $1.00 per DOI * 2,000-10,000 DOIs created = $2,600 flat rate * Organizations creating more than 10,000 DOIs per year would need to work with DataCite as a direct member * Dedicated support for all administrative and technical DOI needs * Inclusion in activities and resources for a committed US community of practice around DOIs * A global data-sharing community and the opportunity to collaborate with a leading-edge network of research data experts Additional information can be found online at https://www.lyrasis.org/programs/Pages/DataCite-US-Community-Membership.aspx. Last year was challenging for all of us as we struggled to adapt to a new normal. However, as libraries faced near-unprecedented budgetary uncertainty, support for OA remained strong as institutions continued to pledge funds to KU. Overall, approximately 310 books and 34 journals will be made available OA in 2021. These include 240 books from the KU Select 2020 HSS Books Collection, as well as 65 books from the KU partner collections and 31 journals, thanks to two ground-breaking Subscribe-to-Open (S2O) projects. KU was pleased to welcome 30 new institutions from around the world to the KU community in 2020. Despite the challenging budgetary environment, KU will be able to unlatch significant content thanks to widespread library support. By the end of 2021, KU's total impact will number around 2,700 books and more than 50 journals. A work-in-progress spreadsheet with provisional title lists, including those titles to be unlatched or made available to supporting institutions as Guaranteed Access (pledging institutions receive free access to all of the content, even if the pledging target of a collection is not reached), are available. Please be aware that changes may still be unavoidable. KU will update the title lists regularly so that institutions have a full overview of titles and their corresponding status. The unlatching of the KU Select 2020 Books will begin soon and the first set of MARC records will also be made available shortly via the KU website. KU appreciates all libraries and institutions who pledged their support in 2020, including 130 institutions from the United States and Canada, as none of this would be possible without such support. KU is currently in discussion with their publishing partners regarding new collections for 2021. Please stay tuned for more information about the upcoming pledging season to be announced in May 2021. KU Granted Certified B Corporation KU has been designated as a "Certified B Corporation," which may be a certification unfamiliar to you. Since 2006, B Corp has operated as an independent agency evaluating and identifying corporations that meet a high level of social responsibility and impact in balance with their for-profit status. As the B Corp website explains: "Certified B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental purpose, public transparency, and legal accountability to balance profit and purpose ... Society's most challenging problems cannot be solved by government and nonprofits alone." After a grueling evaluation process that took 18 months, KU was granted this certification in late 2020. This means that KU has proven to the B Corp evaluation committee that they are focused on using company resources to make a difference in the world. This certification is significant because it recognizes and validates the work KU has accomplished and continues to do. The small yet global KU team is made up primarily of librarians and publishing professionals, all of whom are dedicated to helping the world have access to important scholarly works. To stay abreast of all news from KU, register here and sign up for the KU Newsletter. Registration does not imply commitment to pledge. As you may know, LYRASIS provides technical support and hosting services for Library Simplified, a software solution that allows for easy management of library eContent offerings from multiple licensed and open eContent sources. Library Simplified works through SimplyE, the mobile app, and its cousin Thorium, the Readium Foundation's accessible desktop reader. SimplyE is currently primarily used in public libraries now but is exploring expansion to the academic environment as well. Two of our content partners, Knowledge Unlatched and Michigan Publishing, have now incorporated content into SimplyE, showcasing scholarly ebook content to public library audiences: Michigan Publishing and Fulcrum In March 2021, Michigan Publishing announced the successful integration of their Fulcrum platform with Library Simplified/SimplyE and Thorium. The initial integration is focused on making hundreds of Open Access books from University of Michigan Press, Lever Press, Amherst College Press, and other academic presses hosted on Fulcrum available in SimplyE and Thorium through a set of open protocols. Knowledge Unlatched and the Open Research Library Knowledge Unlatched released the Open Research Library (ORL) platform in at the beginning of 2020 as a way to aggregate OA book content worldwide for user-friendly discovery, offering a seamless experience navigating more than 20,000 Open Access books. The ORL is fully integrated with SimplyE. One of our bedrock values at LYRASIS is that we can accomplish more together than alone and can empower one another to facilitate significant and sustainable change. By connecting these programs, we can increase the reach and impact of these scholarly ebooks for diverse audiences. If you would like more information about any of these programs, please be in touch with me at hannah.rosen at lyrasis.org.
