We recognize that diverse perspectives create empowered and influential communities. In this vein, then we are eager to share the news about a new partnership with scholar-led publisher, punctum books. punctum books, founded in 2011 and incorporated in California, USA as a "public benefit" corporation, is a not-for-profit, open-access publisher of high-quality academic books in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Fine Arts, and Architecture & Design. punctum is devoted to cultivating trans-disciplinary academic work that takes risks with form and style, and to fostering the work of both traditional and non-traditional scholar-researchers, including thought leaders at prestigious universities, early to mid-career researchers at a wide variety of academic institutions, precarious academics, independent scholars, and others who understand the importance of sharing their work with the Open Commons. punctum does not charge authors publication fees and all editorial, production, and post-production work is conducted in-house in punctum's offices in Santa Barbara, California and The Hague, Netherlands in collaboration with UCSB Library, California Digital Library, OAPEN Library, Project MUSE, the Coko Foundation, and ScholarLed. The Supporting Library Membership Program The Supporting Library Membership Program is designed to support the ongoing operations, development, sustainability, and governance of a collectively funded open-access publishing platform (punctum books) that cannot exist without consortial investment from university and college libraries, and which returns extremely good value for such investment. The Institution will provide the Organization with financial support to subsidize: 1. The publication of at least 35 high-quality open-access books per year in the Humanities, Social Sciences, Fine Arts, and Architecture & Design, with no publication fees imposed upon authors; and 2. The collaborative development and sustainable maintenance of open-source and community-owned infrastructure for open-access books in the Humanities and Social Sciences. Membership benefits include the following: * A yearly report detailing Punctum's book releases and the ways in which member funds are being spent; * MARC and ONIX records (KBART files under development); * COUNTER-compliant usage statistics; * Cross-referenced metadata (including DOIs); * Open annotation layer on all of punctum's e-books and e-book chapters; * Long-term preservation of all titles and associated metadata; * Acknowledgment and Institution's logo on the Supporting Library Membership webpage on punctum's website; * Subscription to e-mail list for library partners and to punctum's monthly newsletter; * The right to use punctum's logo in marketing activities; * A voting position on punctum's Library Advisory Board for the term of the Agreement; and * A 30% discount on all of punctum's print editions purchased directly from punctum. In keeping with our core principles, the Content & Scholarly Communication Initiatives team at LYRASIS strengthens connections within and across communities to foster collaboration for broad and meaningful impact. We recognize that in order to support open access content, we must also sustain its underlying infrastructure. In this vein then, we are eager to share the news about a new partnership with the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB) and the OAPEN Library and Publication Platform (OAPEN). DOAB and OAPEN have been operating as closely connected not-for-profit foundations for more than ten years, working together to support the transition to Open Access for books. * DOAB aggregates metadata for almost 40,000 peer-reviewed OA books from over 400 publishers worldwide. * OAPEN hosts over 15,000 peer-reviewed OA books and generates more than five million downloads annually. Both foundations rely on contributions from research institutions, funders, and publishers to carry out their mission and are seeking the library community's help to sustain their services. Benefits of Participation When contributing to DOAB and OAPEN, your institution invests in the long-term sustainability of open, reliable, and truly global infrastructure services for open access (OA) scholarly books. In addition, your organization will benefit from the following services for contributors: * Free hosting, distribution, and preservation service in the OAPEN Library for publishing entities affiliated with the contributing institution. Publishing entities, such as a University Press, that are affiliated with an OAPEN Library member institution will have all their publisher fees for the OAPEN Library waived. * Metadata integration. Contributors are entitled to customized feeds, integrating the metadata of OAPEN and DOAB collections of OA books in MARC21 or other formats. Also available through knowledge bases, such as Ex Libris Primo, OCLC WorldCat, and EBSCO Discovery Service. * Usage reports. COUNTER-compliant usage reports including institutional (IP-based) and geolocation (regional) usage, shared on a regular basis. * Have your say. Contributors are invited to give input to the continued development of the OAPEN and DOAB services on a yearly basis. * Acknowledgment of contributors on the DOAB and OAPEN websites and through DOAB and OAPEN Twitter accounts. * New title alerts. Create custom queries to be alerted when new titles become available in the OAPEN Library. Pricing This opportunity is open to all US libraries and institutions. In December 2020, we launched the pilot of the Open Access Community Investment Program (OACIP), a project developed by LYRASIS in partnership with Transitioning Society Publications to Open Access (TSPOA) and Duke University Press. OACIP's goal is to connect libraries, consortia, and other funders with non-profit publishers and journal editorial boards that need financial investments to sustain or transition to Open Access (OA) publishing. OACIP's pilot phase launched with investment opportunities for two journals, showcasing aspects of each publishing program so that libraries and other funders can use the information to support their decisions about which OA programs to support. We have received a positive response from the library community in spite of the economic consequences of the pandemic and would like to finish the pilot with funding for the two journals by June 30, 2021. Learn More! Webinar Invitation We invite you to learn more about the criteria-driven evaluation approach developed by OACIP to determine if investing in the participating OA journal programs is right for your institution. Speakers will be from the editorial boards and publishers of: Environmental Humanities, an OA journal published by Duke University Press that is seeking investment to publish an additional OA journal issue each year for five years. As the field of environmental humanities continues its rapid growth and development, the Press and the Editors want to increase the journal's frequency in 2022 from two issues to three issues per year. Funding goal: $30,000/year for five years Combinatorial Theory, a new OA math journal created by editorial board members who recently left a large commercial publisher's journal and are re-directing their efforts. The new journal Combinatorial Theory will deepen and broaden the impact of its predecessor, with an inclusive vision that is international in scope under the leadership of a diverse editorial team that seeks top research papers from the global combinatorial community. Funding goal: $25,000/year for five years Webinar Details: Date: Wednesday, May 5 Time: 3:00 p.m. Eastern/12:00 p.m. Pacific Register for the webinar (There is a cap of 99 participants for this webinar. It will be recorded.) Take Action! We still need help to reach each journal's funding goal by June 30, 2021. Join others who have already stepped forward. Your institution or department can review the list of supporters and evaluate these two journal programs by visiting the LYRASIS Open Access Community Investment Program webpage. If these investment opportunities are right for your organization, please email Sharla Lair at sharla.lair at lyrasis.org to pledge support and commit funds. Use of persistent identifiers (PIDs), such as ORCID (Open Researcher & Contributor Identifier) and DOIs (Digital Object identifiers), are included in the recommendations, not only in terms of leveraging PIDs in local institutional systems, but also encouraging researchers to recognize and include PIDs in their workflows whenever possible. Persistent identifiers contribute to open access by making research data and other outputs more FAIR: findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable. To support open research infrastructure and FAIR principles, LYRASIS provides two persistent identifier communities for non-profit organizations in the US: the ORCID US Community, and the LYRASIS DataCite US Community. We are more than happy to hear from anyone interested in PIDs, especially ORCID and DOIs, so feel free to reach out with any questions or to get more information: sheila.rabun at lyrasis.org. To stay in the loop with these programs and other PID news: * Join our ORCID US Community Listserv * Follow the ORCID US Community on Twitter * Follow the LYRASIS DataCite US Community on Twitter * Join the PID Forum, a global communication channel for all things related to PIDs.
