From hannah.rosen at lyrasis.org Mon Nov 2 13:54:01 2020 From: hannah.rosen at lyrasis.org (Hannah Rosen) Date: Mon, 2 Nov 2020 18:54:01 +0000 Subject: [Lyropen] Webinar Invitation: Understanding Open Access and Free Content during a Pandemic Message-ID: Hello and welcome to LYROpen! We are excited to share news and updates about all of our LYRASIS programmatic activities in the world of Open, whether open access (OA), open source software (OSS), open infrastructure and more. To kick off this listserv, I am pleased to announce the following upcoming webinar: Topic: LYRASIS Trending Topics - Understanding Open Access and Free Content during a Pandemic Time: 11:00 a.m. Eastern Date: Friday, November 13th, 2020 Cost: FREE for members*/$25.00 for non-members Register for the webinar. *(if you are a member but do not have or know your member login, please let us know so that we may assist) Description: One of the biggest questions surrounding Open Access (OA) and other freely available resources is the question of usage: how does usage of open content increase over time? Does unfettered access to materials change not only the usage numbers, but also the types of users and usage locations? The 2020 COVID-19 pandemic has introduced a new variable into the equation, and open content publishers and aggregators have seen significant enough changes in usage to identify pandemic-related trends. This panel will focus on exactly how usage has recently changed, and the implications of increased usage for the future of OA and other freely available content. Panelists include Catherine Anderson, Head of the worldwide sales team at Knowledge Unlatched, Richard Gallagher, President and Editor-in-Chief at Annual Reviews, and Jo Lambert, Service Manager at Jisc. As our work supporting OA has increased in recent years, we have realized that the one-off nature of OA programs and initiatives is not conducive to easy administration or participation by libraries. Vetting and procurement processes become complex and onerous as the number of programs increases. We know there is a great willingness across our community to work together to support these initiatives, but we have found that the process to invest in the programs can be a barrier. We need to build stronger, more effective connection infrastructure. LYRASIS, in radical cooperation with a cadre of librarians, scholars and mission-aligned publishers, is developing a new values-based program to make OA initiatives easier to organize and fund. The new LYRASIS Open Access Community Investment Program will be a community-driven, single point of entry that will enable individuals and organizations to vet and fund scalable OA initiatives. It will be designed to: * Equitably connect multiple stakeholders in the scholarly publishing landscape, including funders, institutions, libraries, authors, and editors * Facilitate an experimental and incubation space for emerging open access funding and business models * Centralize the administration and funding of open access initiatives or programs and provide transparency about which stakeholders are participating in each investment community * Provide a funding hub for customized programs, output from smaller publishers, and niche scholarly output in order to maintain diversity of scholarship * Enable investors to make strategic investments in individual programs or distribute funds to multiple programs that align with their missions all in one place, increasing efficiencies and convenience * Help investors put their money where their mission is by encouraging mission matching between the investor and the program in order to build and maintain trust and integrity. Before the end of the year, LYRASIS, in partnership with Transitioning Society Publications to Open Access (TSPOA), will announce a pilot to test the viability, scalability, and sustainability of the proposed Open Access Community Investment Program. If the pilot proves the concept and the program is formalized, it has the potential to result in a web-based service that will support information transfer, promote a diverse array of open access programs seeking investment, manage secure transactions, and provide return-on-investment reports to users. By design, the program will engage all stakeholders in the research and scholarly communication ecosystem in order to initiate and maintain the participating OA programs in sustainable ways. We look forward to sharing further news with you as the project progresses. The need for support, guidance, and assistance in this challenging space is clear, and we are bringing multiple stakeholder communities into our conversation as we determine potential paths forward. In September we announced our partnership with Duke University Press to facilitate contributions to flip the official journal of the Population Association of America, Demography, from a paywalled subscription model to open access. Demography is a leader in the field of population studies and until the end of this year was published through an agreement with Springer Nature. Usage data indicates that Demography is widely used across the full spectrum of colleges and universities in the US. The description of Demography leads us to believe that this journal needs to be published in open access to disseminate knowledge on some of the key issues of our time. Demography presents ?the highest quality original research of scholars in a broad range of disciplines, including anthropology, biology, economics, geography, history, psychology, public health, sociology, and statistics. The journal encompasses a wide variety of methodological approaches to population research. Its geographic focus is global, with articles addressing demographic matters from around the planet. Its temporal scope is broad, as represented by research that explores demographic phenomena spanning the ages from past to present, and reaching toward the future.? Please take a moment to read more about Demography and its prominent place in the field of population studies in the recent press release or visit dukeupress.edu/demography-open-access. Demography?s open-access funding model relies entirely on financial support from libraries and research centers. Libraries, research centers, and other organizations can make a concrete choice to support open-access content at any of the following levels: * Level 1/$4,000 and up * Level 2/$2,000 to $3,999 * Level 3/$1,000 to $1,999 * Level 4/$500 to $999 Organizations may participate at the level that aligns with their budget and their assessment of the value of the journal for their community. You can learn more about Demography?s new funding model through this FAQ. Please direct questions, comments, and pledges of financial support for Demography to Sharla Lair at sharla.lair at lyrasis.org. LYRASIS invites you to attend a webinar hosted by LYRASIS and Duke University Press at 12:00 p.m., Eastern on Thursday, December 10. The meeting details and registration link are below. * Topic: From a Big Deal to Platinum Open Access: How the Population Association of America and Duke University Press Converted Demography * Date: Thursday, December 10 * Time: 12:00 p.m. Eastern | 11:00 a.m. Central | 10:00 a.m. Mountain | 9:00 a.m. Pacific * Register for the webinar (This webinar will be recorded) Description: In 2021, the Population Association of America will move its flagship journal, Demography, from a large collection sold by a commercial publisher to a platinum open-access model published by a university press. University presses provide high-quality publishing services ethically and mindfully, with a mission that aligns with university libraries. But creating a viable alternative to a commercial publisher presents challenges. In this roundtable discussion, players within the scholarly communications ecosystem-a publisher, a librarian, and an association leader-will discuss Demography's financial model and how the community is working together to cover the journal's publishing costs and offset previous revenue streams. At a time when openly available global access to population research is of critical importance, how can the scholarly community ensure that Demography's future is sustainable? And how can university presses build on lessons learned from converting Demography to provide cost-effective publishing alternatives?
