CEUP is an established leader in publishing books about the history of communism and transitions to democracy, reflecting its unique position between the East and the West. Revenue from participating libraries will allow the Press to provide them with access to portions of its highly-regarded closed backlist and publish forthcoming books in OA. All titles will be hosted at Project MUSE. The Model The new OA publishing model gives Opening the Future members access to a package of 50 closed titles from CEUP's extensive backlist, DRM free and with perpetual access to this backlist collection after three years of participation. There are four packages to choose from: * History Package * Political Science Package * Editor's Choice Package * Library Selection Pricing The membership revenue will be used to make newly-published books openly accessible to anyone. When the annual revenue target is met and the entire monograph frontlist is openly accessible, future membership fee rates can be lowered. Annual Pricing Per Package (US$) U.S. Classification (Carnegie Classification - Basic) Canada Classification (CRKN Bands) $425 Associate's Bands: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 $950 Baccalaureate/Master's Bands: 6, 7, 8, 9 $1,425 Doctoral Bands: 10, 11, 12, 13 Opening the Future Partners LYRASIS will support the new model and facilitate US and Canadian library participation in the program. Other partners in this initiative include the Community-led Open Publication Infrastructures for Monographs (COPIM) project, Project MUSE, and Open Access Publishing in European Networks (OAPEN). Project MUSE will host the books, providing MARC records and supporting discovery systems, and subscribers will have access to COUNTER compliant statistics. Membership will be open to libraries and institutions worldwide. How to Participate To support CEU Press Opening the Future, register an institutional pledge at https://www.openingthefuture.net/. This is a reminder that LYRASIS invites you to attend a webinar hosted by LYRASIS and Duke University Press at 12:00 p.m., Eastern on Thursday, December 10. The meeting details and registration link are below. * Topic: From a Big Deal to Platinum Open Access: How the Population Association of America and Duke University Press Converted Demography * Date: Thursday, December 10 * Time: 12:00 p.m. Eastern | 11:00 a.m. Central | 10:00 a.m. Mountain | 9:00 a.m. Pacific * Register for the webinar (This webinar will be recorded) Description: In 2021, the Population Association of America will move its flagship journal, Demography, from a large collection sold by a commercial publisher to a platinum open-access model published by a university press. University presses provide high-quality publishing services ethically and mindfully, with a mission that aligns with university libraries. But creating a viable alternative to a commercial publisher presents challenges. In this roundtable discussion, players within the scholarly communications ecosystem-a publisher, a librarian, and an association leader-will discuss Demography's financial model and how the community is working together to cover the journal's publishing costs and offset previous revenue streams. At a time when openly available global access to population research is of critical importance, how can the scholarly community ensure that Demography's future is sustainable? And how can university presses build on lessons learned from converting Demography to provide cost-effective publishing alternatives?
