Hello everyone.

Although we have been quiet on this list for some time, we have continued our work with university presses to provide you the best of terms and pricing, as we have been doing since 2012. Today, I would like to take some time to share with you information about our latest project.

Introducing the University of Michigan Press Ebook Collection

As you may have already heard, the University of Michigan Press (UMP) announced earlier this year the sale of their new ebook collection. The University of Michigan Press publishes at least 80 books a year in Political Science, Performing Arts, Classics and Archaeology, American Studies, and Asian Studies. Built on an entirely not-for-profit and mission-driven initiative, developed and supported by the scholarly and library communities, this collection includes complete coverage of new and forthcoming UMP scholarly ebook titles with perpetual access rights hosted on Fulcrum<https://www.fulcrum.org/>, a community-based, open source publishing platform that presents the full richness of authors' research outputs in a durable, discoverable, accessible and flexible form.

Motivations

Why now?
The key motivation behind the University of Michigan Press' (UMP) move in creating its own hosted ebook collection is to reconnect with key partners, namely libraries. The University of Michigan Press, as a part of the University of Michigan Library (U-M Library), is library values-based. They wanted to create an ebook collection that epitomized these values from end to end. By selling directly to libraries, the University of Michigan Press has the freedom to engage with libraries in a new way; and in turn, the library community now has the opportunity to engage with the University of Michigan Press in new ways as well.

Why another platform?
The University of Michigan Press also has a strong desire to innovate in order to support digital enrichment, as well as invest in and sustain open source, community-accountable approaches.

Scholarly authors have been increasingly asking for innovations in transforming digital books beyond flat, print facsimiles to include "digital affordances", especially in some visually-rich disciplines that UMP specializes in, such as performing arts and archaeology. In response to this author demand, UMP was fortunate to secure investment funding from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to develop Fulcrum<https://www.fulcrum.org/>, a community-based, open source publishing platform that facilitates integration of digital affordances with the long-form narratives that reference them. The development of this platform led to the natural next step for University of Michigan Press to use the Fulcrum platform as the home for their own ebooks.

Fulcrum itself is built on a network of other community-controlled infrastructure. The platform is based on the Samvera Fedora framework used within University of Michigan Library to support the research data repository, and the creation of publishing functionality on top of this repository base aligned well with the Library's broader ambitions around open infrastructure development. Other players in this open, community-controlled infrastructure includes connected, modular, open source tools and services such as annotation service, Hypothes.is<https://web.hypothes.is/>, or production management system, Editoria<https://coko.foundation/use-cases/#books>.

The library community's investment in the University of Michigan Press Ebook Collection (UMP EBC) feeds into the support of an open, community-controlled scholarly communication infrastructure that fosters transparency, sustainability and innovation within the research enterprise.
