Here's a link to a recording of the Open Library of Humanities webinar held yesterday. We had a great discussion at the end, and I encourage you to listen to the webinar and share the link with others in your communities who might be interested in this OA initiative.

[snip].....

I'd also like to call your attention to a promising new Mellon-funded open access initiative called Open Library of Humanities<http://bit.ly/1wz77wb> (OLH) that may impact university press ebook titles. Initially, this initiative is focused on providing a platform for scholarly articles in the humanities disciplines through a mega-journal that in some aspects parallels the Public Library of Science (PLOS) for the sciences. PLOS and OLH are not at all related in terms of organization, staffing, or funding though. A detailed overview is available in the OLH Prospectus<http://bit.ly/OLHProspectus>.

As a next step, OLH will assist subscription journals in a transformation of their business model into one of open access, and host this branded content on the same platform as the mega-journal. OLH is supported by funds from contributing libraries, called Library Partnership Subsidies. Since humanities scholars typically do not have access to grant funds to pay APCs, an alternative gold open access model is needed for these disciplines. The requested annual subsidy amounts are based on FTE and are quite modest:

0-4,999 FTE

$500

5,000-9,999 FTE

$750

10,000+ FTE

$1,000

Each supporting library will have a voice in determining OLH future directions, one of which could be the hosting of open access ebook content on the OLH platform. Harvard, Oxford, and Cambridge University Presses have expressed interest in working with OLH to host ebook content if this future direction is chosen.

A webinar featuring Dr. Martin Eve, Co-founder of Open Library of Humanities, is scheduled for Wednesday, February 11, from 2:00-3:00 p.m. EST. Please register here to attend<http://www.lyrasis.org/Pages/EventDetail.aspx?Eid=CE1C1C4B-86A1-E411-88A4-002219586F0D>. (With deep apologies to my Canadian friends - please select your favorite US state to register!) I will post a link to a recording of the webinar for those unable to attend.

Dr. Eve is the author of a new open access book, Open Access and the Humanities: Contexts, Controversies and the Future<https://www.openlibhums.org/2014/12/02/new-book-on-open-access-and-the-humanities/>.

LYRASIS is working with OLH to support the initiative in North America. Libraries may indicate their support of OLH at the North American pledge site<https://lyrasis.openlibhums.org/>.
