I am delighted to share the news that Knowledge Unlatched has exceeded its goal of 200 supporting libraries in advance of the February 28 deadline for libraries to register their pledges. More participants are still needed so that KU can show even stronger support from the library community as it advances this new open access ebook model with publishers. As more libraries join the KU pilot, the cost for all participants will be lowered from the original amount of $1,680. Of the 28 ebook titles included in the pilot collection, 20 are published by university presses.

Personally, I am enthused by the strong show of global support for this pilot project from libraries in 18 countries on 5 continents so far, and am encouraged by this development in our collective work to evolve the scholarly communication system.

Subject: [Lyrarl] Update re Knowledge Unlatched open access ebook initiative

I want to share briefly with you the latest news from Knowledge Unlatched<http://www.knowledgeunlatched.org/>, the global open access scholarly ebook initiative. 36 ARL member libraries have pledged support to date, and KU continues to gather substantial support from the global library community and related organizations. Notable events in recent weeks include new arrangements with Portico, CLOCKSS, and the HathiTrust. The list of supporting libraries is newly available on the KU web site.

The pledging period has been extended to February 28. Support from organizations like Portico and HathiTrust along with the growing global support from pledging libraries makes this an exciting project to watch. Over half of the ebook content in the pilot project collection comes from university presses. If successful, KU may develop a complementary business model for university press ebooks that will be appropriate for types of content now available only through traditional models.
