All,

I mentioned the Independent Voices open access project from Reveal Digital on this list back in January, 2013. The following update from Reveal Digital at the end of the first year of the project reports on the progress of the Independent Voices collection and shares information about prospective collections that are in development. Since many ARL institutions are involved, I wanted to share this report with you. Next month the collection will move behind authentication so that access will be available only to institutions that are providing support until two years after the needed funds are secured.

Reveal is also conducting a survey<https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/P3BP6K7> on open access models for building digital collections and welcomes your participation. The survey's goal is to further define and understand the needs of libraries related to open access.

REVEAL DIGITAL Update

Reveal Digital is changing how libraries fund the digitization of special collections. It brings together creators - libraries with content and a desire to digitize it, and supporters - libraries with an interest in a specific digital project and willingness to devote funding to bring the project online under Reveal's open access model<http://www.revealdigital.com/page/PricingandEnrollment/pricing-enrollment>.

Reveal Digital's first collection, Independent Voices<http://www.revealdigital.com/voices> - is a four-year project to digitize 1,000 alternative press titles from the second half of the 20th century. It covers a wide range of social and cultural movements from feminist and LGBT, to campus underground newspapers, the GI Press , the minority press, extreme right-wing press and small literary magazines. We continue to seek supporting libraries in order to reach our cost recovery goal of $2.3 million. To date, 33 libraries have provided funding support for Independent Voices and another 12 libraries are currently evaluating the collection. As a result we are nearly 25% toward our goal, which is right on track as we near the end of our first year of offering the collection.

Libraries interested in supporting the Independent Voices collection and gaining immediate access to the content can do so through LYRASIS<http://www.formstack.com/forms/?1378853-6DxS0zIRNa>.

On the content side, we continue to source feminist material from Northwestern and Duke, and have begun new flows of material from Michigan State (campus underground papers), the University of Wisconsin and the University at Buffalo (both for literary magazines). To date we have sourced, scanned and cleared copyright on more than 250,000 pages of material -- 25% toward our 1,000,000 page goal. We are in the process of creating XML for these new pages and should be completed by February. We also received our first digital submissions of material - The Great Speckled Bird (Georgia State University) and the Ann Arbor / Detroit Sun (Ann Arbor District Library). Digital submissions save scanning costs, allowing us to scan additional titles.

Finally, we are starting to receive interest from libraries in using the Reveal Digital funding model for their digital projects. Currently, we have four projects under early development and hope to be able to present them to libraries for funding by spring. They include:

1. Sylvester Manor Archive (NYU<http://dlib.nyu.edu/findingaids/html/fales/sylvmanor/>)

2. Highlander Folk Center Archive (Wisconsin Historical Society<http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/cgi/f/findaid/findaid-idx?c=wiarchives;view=reslist;subview=standard;didno=uw-whs-mss00265>, Tennessee State Library<http://www.tn.gov/tsla/history/manuscripts/findingaids/1811.pdf>)

3. Liberation News Service Archive (NYU<http://dlib.nyu.edu/findingaids/html/tamwag/photos_022/>, Temple<http://library.temple.edu/collections/scrc/liberation-news-servi>, Amherst College<http://asteria.fivecolleges.edu/findaids/amherst/ma1_main.html>, UMass<http://www.library.umass.edu/spcoll/umarmot/liberation-news-service/>)

4. Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee Digital Archive (sponsored by the SNCC Legacy Project<http://www.sncclegacyproject.org/>)

The above four projects will be presented to libraries through a Kickstarter-like site (currently under development). They will follow an all-or-nothing library 'crowd-funding' model, which means that we won't start working on a project until we have full funding support from libraries. Reveal is actively seeking new digital projects that can benefit from our library crowd-funding model, so please let me know if you would like to schedule a call to discuss your specific needs.

If anyone has questions about the Reveal Digital model or the Independent Voices collection, please feel free to contact me at: jmoyer at revealdigital.com<mailto:jmoyer at revealdigital.com>.
