From celeste.feather at lyrasis.org Fri Nov 16 09:42:29 2012 From: celeste.feather at lyrasis.org (Celeste Feather) Date: Fri, 16 Nov 2012 09:42:29 -0500 Subject: [Lyrarl] Harvard Univ Press Ebooks through ARL Licensing Initiative Message-ID: <2292A4BA7D7F2849B5C69093E659924B246CCF87F4@lyraatlexec> Dear ARL Collection Development Contacts, Some of you are new to this email list, as ARL staff recently supplied additional contact names so that each ARL member library will be represented and be informed about developments as the ARL licensing initiative continues. The purpose of the list is to make each ARL library aware of new ebook offers that have been negotiated with publishers on behalf of ARL, using the ARL-developed license specifications to create a license that meets all requirements. LYRASIS is acting as ARL's agent to accomplish this work, and I am the manager of this program here at LYRASIS. The initial focus of this endeavor is university press ebook content. The ARL initiative is designed to impact both pricing and license terms for ebooks, and all offers can be extended to any other library that is a member of a consortium that includes an ARL library. In this way ARL hopes to create attractive opportunities for libraries across the US and Canada through collective action and a license that meets high standards. Earlier this year we negotiated the first ARL offer for Project MUSE/UPCC ebook content. We are working with MUSE right now to create another offer for 2013 ebook content, so stay tuned for news about that soon. Also pending and expected shortly is an offer from Oxford University Press for the 2011-2013 content from Oxford and its nine partner presses all hosted at the University Press Scholarship Online site. I'm pleased to let you know, though, of the second new university press ebook offer we have negotiated for the ARL licensing initiative that is ready for your review! Harvard University Press has contracted with De Gruyter Online to be the main hosting site for its ebook content, and we have negotiated an offer with De Gruyter for 2011-2013 Harvard ebook content that provides attractive pricing and meets the ARL license requirements. Many details are in the attached memo, so please do read it carefully. This document contains links to the pricing spreadsheet and title list, the central license, and an online form to record each library's intentions to purchase at specified discount levels. The deadline for this offer is April 30, 2013, but please don't wait until April 15 to review! I'm sure you will have many questions, and I stand ready to respond. Thanks. I've attached a memo that provides a thorough explanation of the offer and some commentary about the license negotiations that occurred in order to bring the license into compliance with ARL requirements. This is another "more-the-merrier" type of offer with greater discounts as more libraries participate. The deadline to express your intention to order is February 28, 2013, so we have only three months to gather a large group of participants. Any purchase of any size counts toward the participation goal, and there are lots of price points and collections of different sizes available in this offer. Oxford has scheduled two 40 minute webinars (same agenda for both) about this offer and UPSO in general, and I encourage you to have a representative at one of the sessions. The registration links are below for the two sessions (Dec. 6 and 11), and please pay careful attention to the alternative links for registrants outside the Eastern Time Zone. The agenda for the webinars is as follows: 1) Intro to UPSO and why OUP undertook this program (Niko Pfund, President, OUP USA) 2) View from the Partner Presses (short presentation from a partner press director) 3) Introduction to the UPSO site and how it differs from other ebook platforms (Jessica Chesnutt, Online Product Specialist, OUP) 4) Content overview and offer overview (Rebecca Seger, Director of Institutional Sales, OUP) 5) Marketing support for the library (Annabel Coles, Marketing Manager, OUP) 6) Questions and answers Session 1: Topic: University Press Scholarship Online Date: Thursday, December 6, 2012 Time: 2:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time (New York, GMT-05:00) ----------------------------------------------------- To register for this meeting ----------------------------------------------------- 1.
