Organization History
Shakespeare Santa Cruz (SSC) was a professional repertory theater company based in and
supported by UC Santa Cruz (UCSC). The non-profit theater company produced an annual summer
festival that was started by Audrey Stanley and Karen Sinsheimer in 1981 and ran until 2013.
SSC was known for serving the local Santa Cruz community, from incorporating local child
actors into productions to its noted "Shakespeare to Go" high school outreach program. Each
production was staged on the campus of UCSC, often in the wooded Audrey Stanley and Karen
Sinsheimer Festival Glen, which Artistic Director Paul Whitworth described as "an eccentric
fusion of Shakespeare's Globe, Chartres Cathedral, and Middle Earth." Yet, the company
maintained a larger national and global reach by including Actors Equity Association actors
and by fostering a longstanding relationship with performers from the Royal Shakespeare
Company (RSC). Like RSC, Shakespeare Santa Cruz committed itself to studying the theory and
practice of contemporary Shakespeare performance, inviting scholars into the production
process and providing UCSC students with a window into the acting profession. In 2013, after
UCSC was no longer able to provide financial support to the company, Shakespeare Santa Cruz
disbanded. In 2014, Santa Cruz Shakespeare was formed as an independent non-profit
organization that continues the tradition of summer theater festivals in the local
community.
It was Audrey Stanley's 1975 production of
The Winter's Tale that caught the
eye of UCSC Dean of Humanities and renowned Shakespearean scholar, Cesar Lombardi Barber,
who first suggested the possibility of a Santa Cruz festival. Barber's death early in 1981
prompted UCSC sociology professor Dane Archer to write then-Chancellor Robert Sinsheimer,
proposing a Shakespeare festival in Santa Cruz to honor Barber's memory, draw attention to
the campus, and provide a medium where often-strained town-gown relations could improve. By
late 1980, a group of UCSC faculty, staff, and students as well as members of the local
community had already come together as Shakespeare Santa Cruz. In early 1981, Kristin
Bolder-Froid submitted a proposal suggesting a 1982 summer festival with two plays,
King Lear and A Midsummer Night's Dream, along with
seminars, workshops and films. Chancellor Sinsheimer approved the plan and gave the
fledgling company a start-up grant. His wife Karen Sinsheimer, the founding SSC board
president, along with Audrey Stanley, Cleo Barber and Stella Kahrs, worked at generating
community support and developed a board of directors that would represent the community as
"Co-producers" of the festival.
Until its final season in 2013, Shakespeare Santa Cruz earned a national reputation for
producing innovative, experimental, and dynamic Shakespeare productions and other classics.
Early embracing the surfer-cosmopolitanism of Santa Cruz, productions incorporated
transnational perspectives (the 1984 Balinese-inflected
The Tempest) and
modern contexts (the 1985 Hamlet as soap opera), but were also grouped by
theme and in conjunction with plays by more contemporary authors. Throughout its 31-year
history, it had 7 artistic directors who together produced 27 different Shakespeare plays
and over 30 dramatic works by writers like Molière, Shaw, Albee, Mamet, and UCSC's own Kate
Hawley.
Borne out of "The Players" – a group of actors who performed in local high-schools –
"Shakespeare to Go" was a full-fledged outreach program started by Shakespeare Santa Cruz in
1988 in collaboration with the UCSC Theater Arts Department. Each year, a theater arts
faculty member cast and directed a 50-minute version of one of the plays from the upcoming
summer season of Shakespeare Santa Cruz. The winter quarter was spent rehearsing the play
with the UCSC student actors and the spring quarter was spent touring Santa Cruz, Monterey,
and Santa Clara Counties performing for school audiences. Shakespeare to Go introduced the
works of Shakespeare to thousands of young people each year through these school
performances.
Starting with Royal Shakespeare Company actor and fourth artistic director Paul Whitworth,
SSC began an annual winter "pantomime" festival in 1997. These "pantos" were written by UCSC
professor Kate Hawley and directed by Paul Whitworth, and they featured original settings of
folktales. Though community friendly in their presentation, the winter festival provided
intensive professional training for UCSC students, who worked alongside performers from the
Actors Equity Association and stage managers from the Society of Stage Directors and
Choreographers.
Shakespeare Santa Cruz was nationally renowned for its high-quality productions, marriage
of scholarship and performance, generation of opportunities for students, and the unique
beauty of its setting amongst the campus redwoods. However, SSC faced ongoing budget
shortfalls arising from the challenges of running a theater company with immediate fiscal
needs in the densely layered financial and bureaucratic context of a large university. In
2013, UC Santa Cruz shuttered Shakespeare Santa Cruz because of these ongoing financial
difficulties. During the following year, a popular campaign to renew the festival was
started, outside funding was secured, and SSC was reborn as an independently run production
company known as Santa Cruz Shakespeare.

& Outreach series, which includes curriculum planning documents, scripts, and
photographs from the Shakespeare to Go program, as well as materials from various other
outreach events. The Media series contains audiovisual materials and digital files. The
audiovisual materials include production recordings, some soundtracks, and some audio cues
used in performances and rehearsals; production videos; and recordings of interviews with
Shakespeare Santa Cruz staff and company. Digital files include photographs of productions
and staff, stage manangement files, and some administrative and marketing files.
Forms of materials include production books, costume and set designs, photographs, posters,
programs, correspondence, financial reports and documents, newspaper clippings, promotional

Arrangement
Materials spanning several production seasons, such as programs, posters, photographs,
are arranged at the beginning of this series in chronological order. There are subseries
for each specific season, which contain production materials and photographs for
individual plays during that season, also arranged chronologically. Various oversized
materials not related to specific productions and related research materials are
arranged at the end of the series.
Scope and Contents
This series contains production materials and photographs for nearly every season of
the annual festival, which ran for thirty-two years (1981-2013). The majority of this
series consists of production books, which are also referred to throughout the series as
prompt books, script bibles, and cue scripts. These were typically three-ringed binders
assembled by the production's stage manager, and their contents demonstrate the many
creative and logistical responsibilities a stage manager oversaw in the production of a
play. The production books most often contain cast lists, schedules, annotated scripts,
call sheets, performance notes, set and costume designs, sound and lighting cues, and
stage directions. Less frequently, production books also contain related research,
correspondence, and musical scores.
Most productions were captured by camera; "Photographs" in this series comprise
photographic prints, slides, negatives and contact sheets, with their prevalence in that
order. Images tend to feature scenes from that production's staged performances, with
rehearsals, related programming, company and audience shots, and publicity-related
images also represented. Similarly to production books, they are filed chronologically
according to season; however the photographs are housed separately, spanning boxes
24-30. Many of the photos were selected by Shakespeare Santa Cruz for their quality and
historical importance, and a large portion were taken by photographers Shmuel Thaler and
David Alexander. Production photographs from more recent years (circa 2000s) were often
digital and stored on CDs and DVDs, and are located in the Media series of this
collection.
Oversized materials related to specific productions and general Shakespeare Santa Cruz
operations are in boxes 31-39, and include production posters, set designs, costume
designs, light plots, and topographic maps. Set designs for particular productions
include illustrations as well as ground plans, sections, elevations, stage plans, and
other architectural drawings.
All productions were performed on the UC Santa Cruz campus, unless otherwise specified
(e.g. Montalvo Arts Center).

Scope and Contents
This sub-series contains administrative files from the early years of the
organization, spanning the 1980s through the mid-1990s. Founding documents such as the
initial proposal to the Chancellor about the festival, letters of support, as well as
collected historical documents showing the festival's inception and early years are
included. The organization had strong community ties from its early years, and
elicited support from donors and grant foundations, which is shown in the planning
documents, correspondence, applications, and reports in this sub-series. Planning
documentation and promotional materials for Shakespeare Santa Cruz's numerous early
fundraising and outreach events are also included.

Arrangement

Scope and Contents
This sub-series contains materials created and maintained by the office of the
Managing Director of Shakespeare Santa Cruz. The dates of these materials span from
the 1980s through the end of the festival in 2013, but mostly focus on the mid-1990s
through 2013. The Managing Director of Shakespeare Santa Cruz was responsible for
administrative duties in the organization, as well as the programs and events that
were put on by the organization. This role was often also heavily involved in
marketing and development - seeking out development opportunities and cultivating
existing sponsorships and donor relationships, and handling marketing strategies.
This sub-series includes production notes, correspondence, reports, some general
information on staff roles and job descriptions, budgets and financial information,
marketing and development files, reviews, customer data analyses, ticket office sales
information, membership information and surveys from the Theatre Communications Group
(TCG), and information on partnerships and relationships with other similar
organizations in the Bay Area and nationally.
The Marketing Directors of Shakespeare Santa Cruz included Brian Payne, Paul Hammond,
Marcus Cato, Kyle Clausen, and Aimee Zygmonski.

- Sub-series 1: Grants and sponsors
- Sub-series 2: Chronological files
- Sub-series 3: Capture journals
- Sub-series 4: Phone logs
- Sub-series 5: General development files
Scope and Contents
This series contains materials related to development and fundraising for Shakespeare
Santa Cruz. The organization sought out funding from numerous grant organizations, both
locally in the Santa Cruz area and at a national level, namely from the National
Endowment for the Arts (NEA) for programs such as Shakespeare to Go. This series
includes notes on particular grants and foundations, as well as applications for grant
funding and reports showing progress in response to grant foundations. Campaign
materials sent to individual donors and sponsors, both potential and established, are
included. Chronological files contain information on marketing and fundraising
campaigns, some marketing materials that were distributed, and publicity for potential
donors. Capture journals and phone logs show meeting notes, funding research, and other
operations of the development staff at Shakespeare Santa Cruz. A large portion of the
materials in this series, including the capture journals and phone logs, were created
and maintained by Ann Gibb, longtime development director of Shakespeare Santa Cruz.

Arrangement
This series is arranged in four sub-series:
- Sub-series 1: Shakespeare To Go
- Sub-series 2: Jane Bradford files
- Sub-series 3: General education and outreach files
- Sub-series 4: Exhibit photos
Scope and Contents
This series contains materials related to the education and outreach initiatives and
activities that were a key component of Shakespeare Santa Cruz. The main initiative of
this kind was Shakespeare to Go, a community engagement program in partnership with the
UCSC Theatre Arts department that brought the plays of Shakespeare into local schools
and community centers. The series includes curriculum guides and other pedagogical
materials, photographs, production files, planning documents, promotional materials for
various outreach events, correspondence, and some grant files.
Shakespeare To Go
1986-2013
English.
Scope and Contents
This subseries pertains to the Shakespeare to Go educational outreach program, and
includes curriculum guides, photographs, applications and supporting materials for
grants and minigrants, performance reports, scripts, production books, soundtracks,
and feedback forms and thank you notes from students and community audiences.
History of Shakespeare to Go
Shakespeare to Go was an educational outreach program formed in 1988 by Shakespeare
Santa Cruz and the UC Santa Cruz Theater Arts department. Each year, a faculty member
from Theater Arts would create a 50-minute adaptation of one of the Shakespearean
plays from the upcoming summer season. A cast of UC Santa Cruz students along with one
professional actor would rehearse during winter quarter and then tour the adapted
production to middle and high schools in Santa Cruz, Monterey, and Santa Clara
counties during spring quarter. Workshops developed by SSC staff would often be
available to participating schools so that students could explore Shakespeare in
advance of the performance. The program was funded through a National Endowment for
the Arts (NEA) initiative and various other grants and mini-grants, and was credited
for introducing Shakespeare to thousands of students each year.
