It happens with every resource I've tried and at every archival object level. I tried without typing in the Expression field, and that didn't matter either. I can just manually add them instead, but I want to make sure this is addressed if it's fixable, since it's not working anywhere. Hacktoberfest is open to anyone who contributes pull requests to participating open source repositories on GitHub or GitLab. Whether you?re new to ArchivesSpace development or a long-time contributor, we encourage you to get involved. No specific background or skill level is required to get started, and all community contributions are welcome and appreciated. To learn more about submitting a pull request for ArchivesSpace specifically, visit our wiki. To qualify for the official Hacktoberfest competition, you must register and make four pull requests between October 1-31. Pull requests can be made to any public repository on GitHub or GitLab, including ArchivesSpace. Any qualifying pull request submitted to the ArchivesSpace GitHub between October 1 and October 31 will get a Hacktoberfest label. To learn more about qualifying pull requests and how to notify Hacktoberfest of your pull requests, visit the official Hacktoberfest website. In addition to the official Hacktoberfest swag options, ArchivesSpace will acknowledge all submitters, regardless of number of pull requests, in our October monthly update. The community member who submits the most pull requests in the month of October will receive an ArchivesSpace swag bag! Last year?s winner of the coveted ArchivesSpace swag bag was Joshua Shaw from Dartmouth College. We hope you will join us in this celebration of the open source community. Please email us at ArchivesSpaceHome at lyrasis.org if you have questions or want to know more about contributing code to the ArchivesSpace GitHub. We were pleased to welcome two new board members * Natalie Adams, Systems Archivist from the University of Cambridge. Natalie was elected to represent the Very Large-sized member institutions. * Julia Novakovic, Archivist from The Strong National Museum of Play. Julia was elected to represent the Small-sized member institutions. Both are joining the board for three-year terms beginning this year. The operations report highlighted work with the new ArchivesSpace Diversity Partners program, the progress of the new online training program, and our expanded virtual content in 2020 and 2021, which has totaled over 140 hours of webinars, workshops, forum sessions, community discussions and meetups to meet community needs since the beginning of the pandemic-related shutdowns. We also discussed a recent accessibility audit of the application conducted by Deque and some planned development work.. Gordon Daines is now the board liaison to both the Technical and User Advisory Councils. He shared the work that the Council members have done, especially the newly implemented Chair/Vice Chair and sub-team Lead/Vice Lead model designed to help facilitate leadership and smoother transitions between terms. We heard updates on the antiracism and inclusion initiatives suggested by the community during the community discussions last year. We talked about the importance of the Board?s continuing engagement with those ideas even while it facilitates new conversations on this urgent topic in the wider ArchivesSpace community. We also discussed an effort to better understand the benefits and potential challenges with our Educational Program Membership, which is geared towards helping faculty and students in archives education programs gain greater understanding of ArchivesSpace. We will be conducting a survey of faculty in these programs later this year to learn more about the level of interest. The financial reports show that the program?s financial position continues to be strong. As always, the Board welcomes your feedback. Feel free to reach out directly to me or to your elected representative. On a personal note, I want to thank my fellow board members and all of you for ensuring ArchivesSpace?s resilience and vitality through the upheaval that has marked our lives these past two years. I have learned so much and look forward to continuing to do so. For this open call, the Trainers Corps will briefly explain how to import archival objects via Excel or CSV using the ?Load via Spreadsheet? feature, which became available in ArchivesSpace beginning with v2.8.0. (This feature was formerly known as the Harvard import plugin; those using ArchivesSpace v2.7 or earlier can still access it via the plugin.) Following the presentation, you will have the opportunity to ask questions about the topic, followed by a general Q&A about migration tools and data maps. There is no automatic date parsing in AS out of the box; I?m thinking that any date parsing that you enjoyed was coming from Timewalk. The recent release notes for AS 3.0.2 did talk about date parsing, but that was very specific to preexisting dates in Agent records and was a one-time process associated with the update past 3.0.0, at which point AS parses dates for Agents. That date parsing isn?t referring to a feature in AS, just a one time script that gets run as part of the update past 3.0.0 and then never again. This doesn?t help you, I know! The XML file export when opened shows the error: "{"error":"undefined method `language' for #<#:0x645c2625>"}". When I'm looking at the staff interface, I see "translation missing: language_and_script.language" in the box of the ArchivesSpace fields for "Language of Description" and "Script of Description.? I did a little bit of Googling through the aspace listserv and a fair number of folks seemed to have encountered a similar issue with "translation missing" and had to fix something in their archivesspace/locales/enums/en.yml file? Does anyone have experience with this and an detailed example/explanation of how to fix it? Thank you so much for taking a look, I really appreciate it. In this webinar, members of the ArchivesSpace program team will provide background information about this necessary change and walk attendees through some considerations for downloading and installing Solr. Webinar: Making the Required Move to External Solr for ArchivesSpace When: November 3, 2021 Time: 2:00 p.m. ? 3:00 p.m. ET (11:00 a.m. ? 12:00 pm PT) Where: Zoom Registration: https://lyrasis.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_81SNSMgFTnu6Gmcdf4lO3g This webinar will be recorded and made available on the ArchivesSpace YouTube channel. Webinar description: ArchivesSpace uses Solr for its search platform. Due to necessary upgrades that require moving to external deployment of Solr for the application, beginning in late 2021 deploying ArchivesSpace will require installing and configuring Solr. This change will not affect end users directly, but it will be a significant change for system administrators and others who deploy and manage ArchivesSpace. In this webinar, members of the ArchivesSpace program team will provide some background information about this upcoming change to the way ArchivesSpace is deployed. Team members will then walk attendees through considerations and logistics for downloading and installing Solr at their own institution. An open discussion and Q&A will follow. Who should attend: Anyone who manages their own implementation of ArchivesSpace and anyone planning to upgrade to any version of ArchivesSpace after ArchivesSpace v3.1.x. It looks as though it was down to a failed merging of top_containers, which left some orphaned sub_containers (with null top_container references in the top_containers_link_rlshp table). We knew we had this issue but thought it was just affecting those records- however, it does seem to have had the knock on effect of causing login to fail. A restart of the application resolves it. We're running 2.8.1 against MariaDB 5.5-65, and Java 8. I have tried different versions of the mysqlconnector, but this does not seem to make a difference (first noticed on 5.1.39). The MySQL has been tuned to an extent. The VM has 16GB of memory, approximately 10GB of which is apportioned to AS. The MySQL process was restarted last week, and clearing that has still allowed the issue. It's pretty hard to spot any particular action which causes this. The logging we see once it's happened looks like this: E, [2021-08-18T06:21:01.548843 #90658] ERROR -- : Thread-28310: Unhandled exception! I have taken some statistics around the numbers of threads running pre and post bounce. I don't see anything obvious there, and I have left the config.rb value AppConfig[:db_max_connections] = proc { 20 + (AppConfig[:indexer_thread_count] * 2) } as it is. I'm also aware that we have an issue some others have of a proliferation of FATAL errors since merging top/subcontainers (items cannot be found), but I do not know if it is related to this. However, if anyone recognises this behaviour, and can advise, I'd be grateful to hear about it. From what I can tell all of the plugin files are exactly as what came bundled in with the ArchivesSpace v3.1 build (which we upgraded to from 2.7.1 a few weeks ago, but our plugin wasn't working then either). I also cross-referenced the files with the LCNAF plugin's github directory and they matched as well. This might not be related but just before this error the plugin was returning a different error: Enetunreach (network is unreachable), which seemed to be a result of the server's network not having IPv6 connectivity and disappeared after adding a 6to4 tunnel. I only add this info in the case it is the culprit because otherwise the plugin files have been left alone and the overall installation has been mostly untouched except for the fixing of a few locale files plus a reindex. I've been absolutely stumped so any and all advice would be much appreciated. I also saw somewhere that plugins can be picky about how it's named (folder/directory wise) so I've double checked that it lines up with the sources in that regard as well. On the network issue, I've been able to ping and open a TCP connection when using both written id.loc.gov and it's two IPv4 addresses (104.18.8.80, 104.18.9.80) across various ports from the server however archivesspace itself seemed unable to connect. I did see some older messages about IPs being blacklisted and what not so their fix was to implement a prefer IPv6 addresses code to bypass that but after some investigating it seems that my error was derived from the fact the server can't connect via IPv6 and archivesspace seemed to only try v6, which doesn't seem correct to me. I gave this a test and it does indeed have just the functionality that we are seeking! As for feedback, I only gave it three tries, and selecting fields to include worked well. The place that I had a bit of trouble was understanding how the combination "Display"/"Narrow by Values" was working. If one does not click Display, does one still need to narrow by a value, or, if one does not want to narrow by a value, does one need to select the blank option in the dropdown, even if one has not checked Display? What I was trying to do was to see if I could generate a report that included all of the resources present in the sandbox, but the test runs, despite my various selections of Display/Narrow by Values, I all 3 times ended up with a list of only 2 of the 10 resources. I was probably just not clicking the right combination of Display/Narrow by Value options, so maybe just a revision of terminology or rollover instructions or something like that would help. But this is an exciting feature--when is the new release?! I think the issue you?re pointing out is one of terminology when there is a value with a Boolean like Publish. You can choose to display these, and you can choose to narrow by a value or Yes, a value of No, or no value at all. You are correct that the blank option would be the one to select if you check of Display on these, but don?t want to limit which records display. We?ll look into how to make that clearer. We?re aiming to have the release with custom reports out by the end of the year, though there are many factors that will impact the specific timing. Records can be reordered and cut and paste, but when working with resources in a lower level of hierarchy, attempting to drag (or cut and paste) a resource kicks that resource up to the higher level. For example, moving the Dinners, Etc. file here to the General, 1945-1988 and selecting "Add items before" ends up with the record moved up to the series level. [image: image.png] [image: image.png] [image: image.png] The file can then be re-added to the series as a child as normal. Nothing is noted in the logs during this, and it has persisted through both soft and hard reindexing. Is this a known issue or is there an obvious type of cause to investigate? Thanks for any advice. *Nicholas Stanton-Roark* | Archivist | Robert A. Nicholson University Library Anderson University | 1100 E. These vulnerabilities allows authorization to be bypassed, due to the out of date version of Jetty delivered with the system. I've written up these issues as a JIRA ticket at: https://archivesspace.atlassian.net/browse/ANW-1437, but also wanted to post about the issue here to allow for discussion. We are hoping to soon open our ArchivesSpace instance to the general public. Our security team will not allow ArchivesSpace to be opened to the public while it has a critical security vulnerability. We are running ArchivesSpace 2.8.1, which uses Jetty 8.1.5. However, since all recent versions of ArchivesSpace use the same version of Jetty, I assume that all recent versions of ArchivesSpace are affected as well, including recent version 3.1. Version 8 of Jetty is considered "venerable" (older even than deprecated), as noted at https://www.eclipse.org/jetty/download.php . With this version of Jetty, NetSparker noted 2 critical issues, 3 high issues, 1 medium issue, and 1 low issue. These issues were found by NetSparker, which is one of the security tools we use for scanning. Interestingly, this issue was found by NetSparker only a few weeks ago, and not in our previous NetSparker scans, even though our ArchivesSpace instance has not changed. This implies that the issue was just recently added to NetSparker's vulnerability database, may become more well-known, and could present an issue to other organizations using ArchivesSpace as well. I understand that ArchivesSpace does not heavily use Jetty, and does not serve any static content using Jetty. However, Jetty can still be exploited even if it is behind an intermediary, such as Apache, as described in the links in the ticket. We have spent a little bit of time attempting to upgrade Jetty on our own. We were able to upgrade to Jetty 9.4, but this version is still vulnerable to the issues noted above. We weren't able to upgrade to Jetty 10 or 11, both of which require Java 11 - it looks like this may take some work. Has anyone else observed these issue? Would anyone have suggestions for remediation? I think that the best approach would be to upgrade Jetty to version 10 or 11, in line with a move to Java 11. Given the sensitivity, we maintain security issues in a non-public JIRA. When you encounter issues locally, please do reach out to us at ArchivesSpaceHome at lyrasis.org first so that we can discuss it with you. We're currently investigating this issue. ArchivesSpace has many dependencies built into it, which can make upgrading individual pieces more complex than it might otherwise be. The timing for upgrades is always dependent on matching our available resources with the community's highest priorities, while taking care of infrastructure items and dependencies with the highest urgency as quickly as possible. Jetty is used in a relatively limited way in ArchivesSpace, as it is not the primary web server for most people using the application, which has, in the past, made upgrading it less time sensitive than it might otherwise be. We will review all new information, however, to determine if circumstances have changed. We'll have an update on this soon. Please contact us at ArchivesSpaceHome at lyrasis.org with any questions.
