[Archivesspace_Users_Group] External ID

Aha! I see that they redefined render_aspace_partial and the external id template, instead of what I did, which was to change the line where render_aspace_partial was called in 10 different files — which was why I didn’t want to maintain those changes in a plugin. ( I don’t think I understood the ASpace code base or Rails well enough back then to dare to do that. ;-) 

However, I would now propose that external ids are generally useful and ought to be enabled for creation, view and edit by default.
