[Archivesspace_Users_Group] Default values not sticking?

I have a question about setting defaults; we are running 1.4.2 with the container management plugin.

When creating a blank resource, the Instances appear pre-populated with Child and Grandchild values. See screenshot called Instances1.

I logged in as Admin and set the defaults to be blank, and then saved, see screenshot Instances2.

Yet these two fields still auto-populate with Types and then will not allow you to save until you manually change them. Is this a bug  in setting defaults, or do the defaults not affect these particular fields? I searched and did not find these in the Controlled Value lists.
