Hi Brad and all,

Here's a screenshot from OCLC Connexion. It allows you to pick the language and have a selection of language specific characters or other symbols (such as the copyright symbol) to add into a record:

Another ASpace user kindly alerted me to inputting diacritics with alt key numeric codes ( http://symbolcodes.tlt.psu.edu/accents/codealt.html), so I'll try working with that.

As ASpace moves forward, it might be worth looking into having something more similar to cataloging software for better exporting/importing into catalogs and for processing staff inputting data.

And lastly, thank you, Chris! I will definitely check out that article.

Best,

-Nicole

Hi Nicole,

I recommend reviewing Elizabeth Dunham and Xaviera Flores's excellent article in American Archivist, Volume 77, Issue 2 (Fall/Winter 2014), pages 499-509, titled Breaking the Language Barrier: Describing Chicano Archives with Bilingual Finding Aids. Their article does not specifically discuss ArchivesSpace, but having just presented at SAA 2015 with Elizabeth I am aware she has implemented ASpace at Arizona State University's Archives and Special Collections.

Here's the abstract of the article:

As American society becomes more diverse, archivists increasingly work with multilingual collections and patrons. In Arizona, this situation occurs most frequently with materials created by individuals and communities using Spanish as their primary language. This case study discusses Arizona State University's creation of English and Spanish finding aids for six collections processed as part of a Council on Library and Information Resources grant. It describes the process of creating a Spanish finding aid template; reviews the challenges encountered and solutions designed while translating, encoding, and publishing Spanish guides; and analyzes use of the final documents.

Best

Hi all,

We just received a collection that includes a lot of material in Spanish. Do any of you have experience with how ASpace handles diacritics? I searched the listserv archives, but didn't see too much.

A plug-in for dropdown diacritic options would be awesome...like how cataloging software handles it. Otherwise, are people copying and pasting for Word or another program that allows for diacritic input?

Thank you!

-Nicole
