I really like this. Nice job.
I'm curious about what the > are for next to the badge with number. Does that do anything or is it just an indicator to look for the related content on the right of the screen?

Hi all,
Just published the 0.0.5 for the UI Fix branch. You can download it at
https://github.com/archivesspace/archivesspace/releases/tag/0.0.5
or try it out at :
http://test.archivesspace.org/
This has the subrecord "dots" removed and replaced with a number, as well as some other minor adjustments.
Let us know what you think. Thanks again to all the folks testing...
best, chris.

Hey All-
I haven't tested this latest patch (numbers for sub records), but the issues I was seeing in ui-fix.0.0.2 seem to be squashed in ui-0.0.4! I can freely reorder nodes and they land in the correct spot in the tree. I've tested with small resources and with our largest resource (60k+ objects). All seems good here.
Performance gains are at least the 9-10x I reported earlier - maybe a smidge better even, since I'm now clocking about 3 seconds on a save that took 5-7s in ui-0.0.2 and 45s in 1.3.0. If that holds across the board, then that's about a 15x gain.
Looking forward to testing the numbers vs. dots when I get some time!

Hi,
So, I went ahead and removed these dots in the UI fix branch. Instead of adding dots and binding them to the anchors, it's just displaying a badge with the number of subrecords. I think this works rather well...let me know what you think.
best, Chris.

All,
If I recall correctly, the recommendation from HM was to replace the little circles with a number that corresponds to the number of linked records within that section. Therefore, you'd have both:
1. an indication of how many notes, agent links, etc. there are per section (with the added bonus that it's easier to interpret "15" than it is "°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°"!; and other bonuses of cutting out some bloated HTML, etc.);
2. faster rendering times.
In other words, the only change would be moving from:
Notes >
°°°°°°°°°°°
°°°°
To:
Notes >
15
You do lose one piece of functionality, admittedly, but being able to click on a little circle with no indication of where the link goes isn't much help to anyone. Plus, the little circle links won't work as expected immediately in version uifix-0.0.4 if there are more than 4 circles in that section without the user first clicking the corresponding "Please click to load records" placeholder.

Hi Brad and all,
I like having the visual indicator that there are completed sub-records, which serves as a reminder for reference and collections folks to look for a note or other sub-record. However, if removing them speeds rendering time then I would vote in favor of removing them.

Hi, Maureen,
Thanks very much for your helpful response. We would certainly like to hear from others as well during the next few days leading up to the 3rd quarter release.
Maureen, by "those little boxes on the left navigation...", do you mean the little circles that appear under each sub-record label when a sub-record of that type is present in the record? If so, then I would say the cost of those circles (time to render) outweighs their utility (which is to show how many sub-records of that type are included in the overall record and to allow users to jump from an individual circle to the corresponding sub-record).
As for workshops, we have not done anything with these devices other than point out their presence.
Before we decide to remove them, does anybody make use of them?

Hi Chris,
I like that the "1" and "2" pills stay with the two components I've selected to move to the end of the list even after I've clicked to allow editing on the record - this helps make it much more clear that something wonky has happened (that "2" has been moved to the end of the list but that "1" has been moved to the third-from-last position). I have to wonder - are you thinking that this kind of visual indication is the best that can be done? Is it just not possible for "1" and "2" to be moved to the end of the list where they belong?
I also wonder if the labelling of "1","2", etc. are a little ambiguous. I know what they're doing, since you explained it to us. Would a better label perhaps be "1st selected", "2nd selected", etc?
Also, the click-to-load for links to many subrecords is looking really good. It makes it possible to load records that had failed to load before. Awesome!.
I'm wondering - what do those little boxes on the left navigation really get us? Maybe folks who have taught classes can chime in here, but I'm not sure that users really understand the relationship between the boxes and the numbers of subrecords. And even once they do understand them, I'm not sure that they add much. I noticed that the HM report said that these take time to render - it might be good to shave this off.

Hi everyone,
I've made a few tweaks to the tree ordering process. The process is a little smoother now, since it locks down what a user can do in the edit process, which is making it easier to see where some of the issues are.
