Yes — different search API and different format for results:
OCLC is SRU/W    		http://www.loc.gov/standards/sru/
LOC is OpenSearch 	http://www.opensearch.org/Home

So its not just a config URL change — the plugin has to be rewritten. 
On the plus side: it looks like the same code should handle both LCNAF and LCSH with a different search parameter. 

Does anyone happen to know if there is a similar API  documentation for MESH browser ?
