[Archivesspace_Users_Group] New to the list -- couple quick questions

So – we won’t need help migrating from PastPerfect. That’s going to be pretty straightforward (or as straightforward as migrations go). I’ve worked through a number of PastPerfect migrations in the past. Actually, my question is more around the community itself. There is a plugin architecture that I do plan on having our developers take advantage of, but I’ve heard of work that was in early planning or ongoing, but there doesn’t appear to be the same coordination as say in the Hydra community space in helping to ferret out that work. I’m trying to figure out how I might find out what is being done because I’m a firm believer that you try not to recreate the wheel whenever possible. Likewise, at DLF there were a number of interested parties discussing ArchivesSpace and Hydra integration, as well as ArchivesSpace with other repository integration. Again, we can make it work here, but there is obviously a larger group that has been talking about what this looks like and I’m trying to figure out what form, if any, this work has taken at this point.

Thanks,

1. The current migration tools, were not designed to work with data other than from AT or Archon, nor are there any plans to extend them to work with other data sources. That said, their respective source code will be made available to the public at some point, so anyone would be free to modify them. A familiarity with Java for the AT tool, and Jruby for the Archon tool would be needed though.

As for migrating PastPerfect data, we are currently working on a general purpose tool for migrating data from an Excel File into ASpace so that may of interest to you. I believe excel file can be exported from PastPerfect. The real challenge with this approach would be the mapping of the data between the two systems.
2. Since ASpace is designed for integration with other software tools using basic http protocols, then synching with Fedora should be possible. The catch of course, is that custom software needs to be written that acts as the middle man between Fedora and ASpace.

In summary, what you want to accomplish will likely require developer resources to do the customized data migrator and middleware for Fedora/ASpace.

Hi folks,

Ohio State University has recently joined the ArchivesSpace community and will be working this summer to start a process of migrating content from our current system (PastPerfect) into ArchivesSpace. As we start thinking about this process, a couple of questions come up:

1) As we look at this migration, one of the things I’m interested in is the community around it, specifically the plugin development. Is there a place where members can see (or here about) what types of work is being done to extend the software.

2) A number of members of this community also utilize other repository services (@ DLF, the Hydra folks and ArchivesSpace folks were chatting) – I’m interested in learning more about this work as well. I’m aware of the work being done at Penn State, but as we think about how we modify archival workflows, one of the things I’m thinking about right now is how we can connect ArchivesSpace and our fedora repo so that we can more easily manage deposit of born digital materials.

Thanks,
