Very helpful. I'm wondering if there could be some type of status page on the ArchivesSpace website to alert people to what's currently working or not? Or projected (rough) timelines for when things will be added? In this specific example, people would be able to know that currently agents aren't being imported. (Maybe that was announced somewhere and I missed it?) Or, if there is a rough goal for when importing agents will be available again that would be great to know to. It's hard to plan a local implementation without rough timelines. -Cassie On Fri, Jan 31, 2014 at 5:12 AM, Chris Fitzpatrick < Chris.Fitzpatrick at lyrasis.org> wrote: > > > Hi Cassie, > > > Thanks for the email. > > > Just looked into this a bit...seems to be running into a couple of > issues here. > > > First, it looks like the importer is not accepting "TRUE" or "FALSE" > values for booleans. I'm just starting on a similar project, but I don't think that we'll be ingesting too much EAD directly into ArchivesSpace at this point, so I'm still very unfamiliar with that process. In the meantime, if you're importing EAD files into ArchivesSpace, do you also have an XML editor like oXygen? If so, then you could validate these documents against a Schematron file that would tell you exactly where those errors occur. I have honestly never written a Schematron file until just now (but I was very inspired at the EAD Hackathon!), but using the following example file (which I just hastily put together) with oXygen will show you exactly where those problems occur: Date normalization is invalid (end date occurs before begin date) In this case, I'm assuming that you have schema-valid EAD files, but if you're using the DTD instead, you should be able to just delete that "ead:" piece of text or replace it with "*:". I hope this might help. Obviously you could turn this example into a much more robust Schematron file, and test for a lot of other things, too. One function that I wish that the AT had (which would address your second question), would be the ability to easily change the import and export mappings. This would definitely be nice with ArchivesSpace, too, and I would love if ArchivesSpace had the built-in ability to post-process the XML export with an XSLT file (or a series of those transformations, via XProc). One huge potential benefit: it would allow you to produce EAD3 files out of ArchivesSpace pretty darn easily (and soon after the standard is finalized!), but still retain the ability to export EAD2002. In any event, even without having this functionality built-in to the web framework, you could still post-process your ArchivesSpace EAD files to include enumerated components. Here's a style sheet that will do just that (do note, though, that this transformation could definitely be written more succinctly, but as it is, it should be pretty self-explanatory): https://github.com/fordmadox/EAD-2-EAD/blob/master/components-c01andc/EAD-Unnumbered-2-Numbered_components.xsl Mark -----Original Message----- From: archivesspace_users_group-bounces at lyralists.lyrasis.org [mailto:archivesspace_users_group-bounces at lyralists.lyrasis.org] On Behalf Of Sara Seltzer Sent: Friday, February 07, 2014 12:11 PM To: Archivesspace_Users_Group at lyralists.lyrasis.org Subject: Re: [Archivesspace_Users_Group] Resource Record Sorting? What I?m primarily thinking of is a short document that details: ? Who manages usernames ? Who requires usernames (e.g. I want to avoid having generic accounts for students, volunteers, etc.) ? What information is required as part of a user?s account (beyond the ?Username? and ?Full name? fields) ? How user accounts are deactivated (not deleted) ? Etc. I?m planning to work on a document like this today, but I was hoping that there might be others who were further along in their adoption of ArchivesSpace who?d be willing to share. Ideally, it would be best to either deactivite or keep a list of deleted accounts for audit purposes. Hello all, The University of Pittsburgh recently joined ArchivesSpace so we are in the early stages of understanding the migration process from Archivists' Toolkit. There are obviously many steps to consider so I'm wondering if anyone has created a workplan that describes how your institution plans on conducting (or has already completed) its migration from AT to AS? If so, are you willing to share that document? I know the AS documentation includes the AT migration plugin and the AT Migration Guidelines, but I'm not looking for that type of technical documentation yet. Rather, what steps other than the migration itself should be considered? Thanks! Ed Edward A. The migration script can be downloaded from https://docs.archivesspace.org/tools/index.html. The resources for migrating data from Archivists' Toolkit and Archon include 1) the migration script plugins, 2) migration guidelines, and 3) and source-to-target mappings. [cid:image002.jpg at 01CF2704.E529D470] The AT and Archon plugins are scripts for executing migrations. The migration guidelines for Archivists' Toolkit and Archon explain how to prepare for migration, to use the migration scripts, and to assess the success of the migration. The source-to-target mappings indicate how data is migrated from fields in Archivists' Toolkit or Archon to ArchivesSpace. While the migration guidelines and maps are available to all ArchivesSpace members at this time, the migration scripts are being released in stages to different segments of the ArchivesSpace community. The AT to ArchivesSpace migration tool is now available to all ArchivesSpace members. The Archon to ArchivesSpace migration tool was released to Charter members on January 21, 2014, and will be released to General members on April 21, 2014. Each migration tool and associated documentation will be released to the public 180 days after the initial release of each tool. In addition to the migration resources, ArchivesSpace team has a migration specialist on staff until October 2014. As requested, the migration specialist will assist member institutions to migrate data from Archivists' Toolkit or Archon to ArchivesSpace. Initially, as with the migration scripts, the migration specialist will be available only to assist charter members for the first ninety days after the release of the migration resources. The migration specialist will be available to assist general members as general members are permitted access to the migration scripts. Even though all migration resources will eventually be made available to the general public, the migration specialist will only provide migration support to ArchivesSpace members. Brad W. Bradley D. Can you clarify the procedure would be to modify the staff interface? I read the documentation in the plugins folder: https://github.com/hudmol/archivesspace/tree/master/plugins If I am reading this correctly, one should be able to put any local modifications in the 'local' folder, without having to modify the core code to the application, if you use the same folder/file naming convention as in the main part of the app, then rebuild the code. Is that the basic procedure one should follow to modify stuff on the staff side? Reading your note below, it makes it sound like you should modify the core files, which would then get your code out of sync with the main code base. One other question I have is whether it is possible to have multiple 'local' versions, so that you can have separate themes for repository a, repository b, repository c, etc. Chris Prom On Feb 18, 2014, at 8:38 AM, Chris Fitzpatrick > wrote: Hi Jamie, Well, I would say the interface is very customizable?, but it requires going in editing the source code and rebuilding, so it depends on how comfortable you feel doing that. Running that script on a directory full of EAD xml files will leave behind .json files for the ones that successfully parse. You can then import the json files with something like ( where $N = repository number ) : for JSON in *.json > do > curl_as_osx admin admin -d @$JSON http://localhost:8089/repositories/$N/batch_imports > done An advantage of the separate parse & import is that you can do all of the parsing on your development laptop, but post to another server?s backend port. ? What I?ve figured so far ( besides those character count limits ) is: must contain an element, and it?s contents must be a number and a unit ( although unit seems to accept almost any phrase, as long as it?s preceded by a number. ) Are there other places where is required ? This seems to be the greatest class of import error we?re seeing, even after fixing some of the instances with a stylesheet. There are restrictions on dates, but we haven?t quite figured out those rules: It clearly doesn't like ?n.d.? (no date) or ?c.a.? (circa) as a prefix. ( Will it parse as a suffix, after a date ? ) We?re also seeing truncated unittitle?s on some of the ones that have been successfully been imported. In some instances, these occur when a contains mixed content, for example: Newspaper Clippings, Richmond Times Dispatch,1967-1968 shows up as ?Newspaper Clippings,? . I don?t know if it?s specifically the mixed content and embedded tags that is the problem, or if it?s the empty attributes ( xlink:href=?? ? those are added by the LOC dtd2schema.xsl conversion. ), but I have seen empty attributes in other elements cause parse errors on import. ( There appear to be other truncations that may not fit that specific pattern, that I haven?t traced yet. ) ? Steve Majewski -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... I was out ill the last couple of days. No, this is not a dumb question at all...it is in fact a bug that was fixed last month (just after the 1.0.4 release). To fix this, just download this script => https://github.com/hudmol/archivesspace/commits/master/launcher/backup/lib/backup.rb ( click the "Raw" view on Github and use the browser's "Save As" to save the raw script to your computer). Replace the launcher/backup/lib/backup.rb with this downloaded version. Alternately, you can just add : require 'asutils' To line 12 of your current script (that's the only change). That should let you run the backup.bat script without any issues... Let me know if that works. best, chris.
