July 2018 Update

We just had a great webinar featuring work the Reports sub-team has recently accomplished, which will be included in the next release. Read on for more news!
Development
Our next release is imminent. We expect to put out a release candidate this week, and then, barring major issues, aim to put out the release itself no later than August 10. The centerpiece of this next release will be the refactored reports worked on by our own Sarah Morrissey. Another area that will be less immediately visible but bound to be appreciated by many is code to enhance staff interface performance that has been contributed by Mark Triggs. The release will also include a number of other fixes and improvements from community members, the program team and those working with us. Look for an announcement later this week of the release candidate and a call for wider community testing.

The ArchivesSpace Users Advisory Council's Documentation sub-team is seeking input from the community in an effort to improve the application's documentation, which currently consists of the User Manual, screencasts, and video tutorials.

* 408 - Pop Up: The Messy Work of Database Migrations<http://sched.co/ESmL> (Friday, August 17 - 9:45am - 10:45am)
Moving from one database to another is anything but a smooth transition. A panel of archivists will share their experience of cleaning data, organizing and "packing" finding aids, and migrating them from one database to another. As with a household move, we encountered cluttered closets, broken items, and long lost treasures we forgot we owned. In our commitment to transparency, we will discuss the real and arduous challenges we encountered in our database migrations and will share our programming fixes, plans for standardizing our data, and lessons we learned along the way. No archives have completely perfect finding aids which can cause database migration to be a seemingly impossible task. This panel's goal is to candidly share the hurdles we encountered and solutions we implemented in our own database migrations in order to make yours less challenging.
This panel format pop-up will present on a number of databases from which we migrated from including Archivists' Toolkit, Archon, ReDiscovery, and Homegrown Databases into Archives Space. We will offer our solutions to commonly encountered challenges and pitfalls and show helpful tips and tools. We will share lessons learned and solicit a robust question and answer period in order to best address unique audience inquiries. We encourage anyone who is thinking about a database migration, completed one and may have insight to share during our Q & A, or anywhere in between to attend our session. In addition to our panel presentations, we will highlight a newly created Awesome ArchivesSpace List that can serve as a wonderful resource tool for those in the database migration market.

For the first time in decades, NYC Municipal Archives is newly addressing legacy issues to provide access to more than 400 years of records. Challenged with the complexities of government, we've struggled to maintain the balance between function and provenance. To provide access and context, we've established a historical ontology within ArchivesSpace of NYC government creators and traced them to their modern-day Record Group equivalents. Join us for a special session sharing our process.
* 709 - Beyond the Reference Interview: Assessing the Reading Room Experience<http://sched.co/ESmt> (Saturday, August 18 -10:30am - 11:30am)
Join us to explore and discuss strategies deployed by public services archivists to gauge levels of patron satisfaction in physical and virtual reading room spaces. Contributors share assessment efforts designed to create more inclusive and efficient research experiences. These include techniques for creating and delivering surveys, data collected from usability studies on several different interfaces (ArchivesSpace PUI, Aeon, and web-based digital collections), and tools for training and assessing students who are responsible for providing research services.

This is a continuation of a series looking into the various sub-teams of the Technical Advisory Council and User Advisory Council to provide insight into the variety of activities and initiatives undertaken by these groups.
