Distributing for Carol Mandel...

Dear ArchivesSpace members,

I am writing to report on the ArchivesSpace Governance Board 4th Quarter meeting, a 2 hour virtual meeting which was conducted June 1st.

The board approved the nominations for the election slate for the Governance board, and appointments to the Technical Advisory Council and User Advisory Council. We thanked the Nominating Committee, chaired by Gordon Daines, for their careful and hard work. Gordon will send out an announcement of the election and appointment results once the process is complete.

We approved procedures for electing the ArchivesSpace Governance Board Chair and Vice-Chair. John Wilkin, Dean of Libraries and University Librarian at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, will be the Governance Board Chair for the 2018/2019 term. Gordon Daines, Special Collections Department Chair at Brigham Young University, will be the Vice-Chair for the 2018/19 term; the Vice-Chair is the chair-elect.

We also approved a FY18-19 budget focused on further growth and development.

We reviewed:

  * the continued excellent work of TAC and UAC and thank the members for their dedicated participation
  * updates on the founding partner and organizational home agreements
  * a financial report that confirms we are on budget and in a strong financial position

We welcomed Dr. Erik Mitchell to the Governance Board. Erik became the Audrey Geisel University Librarian at UC San Diego (UCSD) in April 2018 and he will represent that ArchivesSpace founding partner. Erik was previously the Associate University Librarian of Digital Initiatives and Collaborative Services at UC Berkeley.

The board members thanked departing board members Heather Heckman, Audra Eagle Yun, and Gregor Trinkaus-Randall for their active and substantial service on the board.

Heather has served one term representing the "small" membership category. Heather's contributions include participating in the Organizational Home Agreement subteam and working to ensure ArchivesSpace meets the needs of the small and very small membership categories.

Audra has served one term representing the "very large" membership category. Audra's contributions include participating in the Bylaws review subteam and the Mission Statement and Guiding Principles subteam.

Gregor Trinkaus-Randall has been an ex-officio member representing the LYRASIS board since 2016. He was active in the Bylaws review and exploring ways to grow use of ArchivesSpace.

The Board very much appreciates their commitment to furthering the ArchivesSpace community.

As we look ahead to a new membership term, we continue to see this community that we have all built together grow and develop in exciting ways. Members are essential to its success, and your participation in all of its facets is both encouraged and vital. The Board welcomes your communications and comments on anything mentioned here, or anything else related to ArchivesSpace that is of concern or interest to you.

On a personal note, June's meeting was my final one on the ArchivesSpace Governance Board as I am stepping down as dean of the Division of Libraries at New York University effective June 30. Participating in the growth of ArchivesSpace from an idea to a brilliantly successful open source model has been incredibly gratifying. The success of ArchivesSpace is the vibrant, active, engaged community that you have all created. Your willingness to give your time, expertise and ideas has had an enormous collaborative impact. Thank you for all we have done together, and thank you for all you will do in the years to come.

Respectfully,

Carol A. Mandel
Chair, ArchivesSpace Governance Board
Dean, Division of Libraries, New York University
